oops! I missed a month!!!

Sept22nd

He’s one that I got from the side showing the coloring on the leg.

I measured the frog and it is about 4 1/2 now. It was half dollar sized in May when I got it. It sometimes vocalizes...but it’s infrequent (like maybe 5 or 6 times since I have had it) and it is a low short sound. I think of a "bullfrog" call as something louder.

Any ideas on the sex? (I’m thinking male!)

Also, I have been feeding him mostly on canned Grasshoppers and goldfish. I read to much mammal meat like mice isn’t good, but fish was OK, and the bones would help w/ calcium. I’ve never given him mice or anything, but he get around 6 lg Goldfish a week +grasshoppers and a few crickets just for something to chase. Is that OK?

Good looking male.

You’re right on with the mice. Once or twice a year was my policy for adults. A bit more frequent for young ones.

As far as fish, they are often loaded with parasites. I would stick to live bearers instead of goldfish. I never used them personally though. My staples were crickets, earthworms, and various species of roaches I raised.

Really though, props on a beautiful frog.

ThanX! you’re pretty sure he looks like a male then? I was hoping for a male.
If the goldfish aren’t that great I could try and find something else. I use rosey red minnow for my turtle, would those be better? I just started using the goldfish because it’s hard to find prey items for him that are big enough that it doesn’t take A LOT to satiate him. I used to get earthworms at the bait shop, but for some reason after a while he decided he wasn’t going to eat those. I think it’s because of the nasty tasting slime on them. Is there a way to make them more palatable?

Thank you.

I would say a male too. I would stay away from goldfish because of the parasite thing. I always used crickets and worms as staples for my Pixie. Very nice colours on him though. Maybe he’s just spoiled and is just used to getting the fish. I know mine wouldn’t eat crickets for the longest time because she was used to getting worms.

You can dust the worms with a calcium or vitamin powder. I have read reports of fish diets being "too" high in calcium, but that material was very old. Calcium overdose can happen though for various reasons.

The biggest problem with feeder fish is the condition they are kept at the pet store. Over crowded tank, dirty water, these tend to contribute to an overload in parasites.

If you want to continue to use feeder fish then maybe get some platies or mollies and rais them yourself. Live bearers are easy to care for and you can keep them clean yourself.
