 Quick Question about Pacman Frogs

Hey Everyone...
I’m a regular member over on the Water Dragon forum, don’t own any frogs myself, however my sister and her son have a 4 year old Pacman frog that she is concerned about. She has been asking me all sorts of questions and concerns but I have no idea what to tell her, so I thought I would come here and see what sort of help I can get.

They have had the Frog (Chompers) for 4 years now, its in a 20 gallon or so terrarium with a substrate of I coconut husk.
Tank temperatures are around
Humidity levels are unknown (I told her she needs to find out, just a guess on my part)
His primary source of food is feeder gold fish, a dozen every 10 days or so. Like I mentioned before, frogs aren’t my thing, this seems REALLY low to me. But all I have to go on is what my turtles and dragons eat, they both could eat that in a couple days.

Recently he hasn’t been eating, he appears skinny, he has been burying himself and seems to be breathing slower. She knows that his tank has not been warm enough for him lately (I don’t know why she hasn’t fixed this).
Is it possible that he is going into hibernation mode?
If he is hibernating what should she do to make it better for him? and how long will he hibernate.

Also, kinda jumped the gun here, I highly doubt they have ever sexed him, how can you tell a male from a female. If it is a female could she be preggers? (My dragons barely eat when they are gravid)

Thanks in advance, if you need any more info let me know and I will get it. I live 2 hours away from them so I can’t get pics of it for at least another week and a half.

 Quick Question about Pacman Frogs

Temps are unknown, sorry... They have a thermometer in it but my sister has never checked it... she usually leaves caring for the Frog to her husband so he is the one that would normally check it. She is getting concerned now because of the frogs behavior...

I was also just told that he apparently kept burying himself and her husband kept digging him out, now however he has been dug out and doesn’t seem to have the energy to bury himself again... should I tell her to bury him?

 Quick Question about Pacman Frogs

I don’t really know that much about pacman frogs, but why would you unbury it if it burrows? Pacmans are burrowing frogs, and they hide under the substrate until night. Maybe "not having the energy to rebury himself" is the frog getting really stressed out from being unburried every time it burrows, so it feels insecure and vulvnerable.

Unless it’s with another frog, than I don’t think it’s gravid.

Also, I’m pretty sure feeder fish are a bad diet for pacmans. Crickets are a better staple.

Anyone correct me if I’m wrong.

low temps will cause them to hibernate. feeder gold fish are high in parasites and disease because they are kept in overcrowded tanks at the store. digging up your pacman will stress them out. you can let it hibernate, but make sure you don’t feed it for a few days before you do that or the food will rot in its stomach.

it’s better to just put a 60 watt blub over the tank to raise temps. they will remained burried during the day though, that is normal for a nocturnal frog....

 Quick Question about Pacman Frogs

Sorry to be a pest, but my sister won’t leave me alone about it...
The frogs skin has gone hard just like all of you said it would during hibernation. But his eyes are open.

I’m not used to animals that hibernate, is the eyes open thing normal?

If its normal how can you tell the difference between hibernation and dead?

I’m really trying to find a polite way to tell her maybe they should take this as a sign and lay off the exotic pets...

Thanks again everyone

a membrane will harden over the entire body. you should not dig it up. heat it back up and mist the tank down a bit and in a few days she’ll come out of it.
