I have a 3 year old son and everytime we go into the pet store he wants a whites tree frog, I finally gave in and decided to get him one...I got a 29 gal tall tank for him and bed-a-beast and all the stuff for his tank....Now I got to thinking about it last night and can he get get it out and hold it?? Will it bite him?? I cant believe I didnt think of all this sooner...But before I go out and buy it I want to make sure its safe for a 3 year old...also, this is our first "frog" experience!!! So I want to know what I am getting into with it......THANKS!!!!!

Frogs are not "pick it up and hold it" animals. Whites are okay-ish starter frogs, not the best, but okay. But if you want an animal that your child can pick up and hold, you want a hamster, rat, or guinea pig. Some reptiles tolerate handling (leopard geckos, bearded dragons) but very few actually "like" it, and I don’t know that I’d trust even the most repsonsible 3 year old to do so in a way that doesn’t risk his own safety or that of the pet. 3yos are unpredictable little people. Better starter frogs (but again, you can’t really handle them) are African Clawed Frogs (aquatic) or Horned (PacMan) Frogs.

Most amphibians have fairly delicate skin, and do not do well with frequent handling. A 3yo is likely to want to hold it a lot, which would not be good for pretty much any frog.

I agree with Ferndalezoo frogs absorb water through their skin so whenever you hold one any bacteria on your hands can be absorbed into the frog which has resulted in many untimely demises I am sure. If you decide to get one at the very least you should wash your hands very well prior to holding him as well as after

I agree with Ferndalezoo and Heartwork, a frog is not a good pet to hold. The oils on our skin is toxic to most frogs, which is why you’d want to wash REALLY well before handling (which should be kept to a MINIMUM). Any frog will bite; they aren’t being mean, they’ve just mistaken your fingers for food. The trick when this happens is DO NOT PANIC. Panicking often causes you to shake in an attempt to get the frog off the finger, which ends in the frog flying across the room and a severely injured frog. Any 3yo that is bitten is likely to panic (mostly because he’s scared) and said scenario will probably happen. I would not recommend any frog for a 3yo.

White’s tree frogs are a good starter frog, minimum care, compared to other frogs, and they can be held unlike other frogs. Their skin is not as delicate and is a lot waxier so impurities can’t get in very easily. If you want a frog that is good for beginers and that can be held get a white’s tree frog.
