 Is my tadpole dying?

I have a leopard frog tadpole that I got last Sept. He has become very lethargic the last week or so. He is lying upside down and looks dead, but will wake up if you move the water for a while. When he swims he turns like a corkscrew. Is he getting ready to become a frog or do I need to prepare my 6 year old son for his death?? any help would be appreciated!

 Is my tadpole dying?

Hey Frogmom,

I never seen mine upside down.

Your tadpole has never started changing? What are you feeding him?

 Is my tadpole dying?

I am feeding him the tadpole food that came with my frog kit. It is some kind of crab pellet. he still has not moved since yesterday, but if I vigorously shake the water he responds. Thanks.

 Is my tadpole dying?

I’m not an expert...i’m on my first tadpole to frog thing now. I been feeding my tadpole Nutrafin spirulina Algae Flake Food and lettuce that I boil for 15 minutes. I don’t know what they gave you to feed your tadpole. Mine is pretty much frog with a tail now, but he never swam upside down. The only suggestions I can make is to give some different food and clean out the tank with some fresh dechlorinated water and see how it does. Also what temps do you have the tank at? I found that higher temps in the high 60’s low 70’s seem to do well in. It seems odd that your tadpold has not changed at all yet.

 Is my tadpole dying?

Well, I guess I have my answer now as he is most definitely dead. I have poked him gently and he is lying on his back, quite stiff. Our local nature guide told me if they do not change by Winter they can stay as tadpole until Spring comes. He actually said I could just leave him in the basement in the cold and he would hibernate (I did not do this though). So I though nothing of it when he did not become a frog. I have been very good about changing his water with bottled water every 2-3 days and keeping the tank clean. Now, after 7 months, I have a dead tadpole and a hysterical little boy! Anyway, we may see if we can get another tadpole locally or one that is already a frog. Where did you get your tadpole?? Thanks!

 Is my tadpole dying?

I got my tadpole at a tropical fish store, it was luck really...I just wanted a newt and they were in the same bag because they just was delivered to the store. You can call and ask the petshops if they can get them in for you, or take your son to the pond and try to catch one out of there. This was my first experience with a tadpole and its just an amazing process watching them change.

Keep us updated on what you do.

 Is my tadpole dying?

sorry to tell u frogmom, but with most animals, lying upside down is a sign of near death.
good luck anyway

 Is my tadpole dying?

Thanks for all the info. I called the company we got our tadpole from and they are sending me a replacement free as our’s never morphed. We had a proper funeral and burial for "Tad", my son wrote a story in tribute to him and we are recovering. Our new tadpole will not arrive until early May as it is too cold to send to Wisconsin this time of year. We are hoping that the next one morphs and has a long life. Definitely don’t want to go through having another die! Meanwhile, my son will be checking ponds as he is out with his Dad fishing. Thanks to everybody who replied!!!

 Is my tadpole dying?

Dear Frogmom,
The exact same thing is happening with my daughter’s tadpole (named Jumpy). We’ve had him since the end of November 2003 and have been waiting for him to go through metamorphosis. Then about 10 days ago, he seemed to become very ill. He lists on his side most of the time, but will thrash around if disturbed. He won’t eat and I’ve changed his water (1/2 of it) a couple of times. Another symptom he had was that his waste was black at the beginning of his illness. I didn’t know if that meant he was absorbing his tail as part of metamorphosis or what. Has anyone shed any light on what could’ve possibly been wrong with yours and what you could’ve done differently?

 Is my tadpole dying?

We got a new tadpole in June and glad to say he changed into a frog in days!! "Ted" is very healthy, eats crickets like crazy, and we are in the process of designing a new habitat for her. Thanks to all who replied. It was hard to watch our first tadpole get sick and die, but we are very happy with our new little frog!!
