Yes and no, some of our native amphibian species; (Triturus cristatus, Bufo calamita & Rana lessonae) are under strict laws across the nation to stop them being taken from the wild. In most areas of the UK I believe it is legal to take R.temporaria, B.bufo, L.vulgaris & L.helveticus from the wild to keep as pets however under certain councils it is illegal to take all native species from the wild without a license so check with your local council as the fines can be very high.

no; dont; stpid; idiotic- words to describe what your doing.

think . . . how would you like it if you were strolling around a prk and some idiot picked you up and pu you in his closet and fed you old mexican food? this is the equivilant to what ypou are doing

dont do it its inhumane unless you take it fom like the middle of the road where it is bout to b killed. or take one from a deforested area.

I live in the US so I don’t know about UK laws and such. All my frogs came from the wild as babies and are doing GREAT.. fat, happy, and healthy. No chance of getting eaten by predators, no parasites, etc.. They all live in a froggie heaven! LOL
Here’s a pic of my Pickerel Frog, (Rana palustris) as a baby and then as a three month old.

How cute. I caught a pickerel frog last year...had to look up on internet to see what species it was. I turned it loose again. I have a small pond with a waterfall by my patio, and in it I have about 8 frogs...3 are huge, and one, Theodora, will eat from my hand, and let me pet her. I feed her big grasshoppers. My goal is to grow her so big that nothing can eat her. One fact I wonder if you know the answer to....she changes colors..some days is very pale, taupe color, other days very very dark, almost black. Any idea why she does that?

I did a goggle search on frogs changing colors, this is what I found, "There are a number of frogs and toads that can change color, depending on the temperature or substrate." Link I had no idea it was temperature or substrate.

I’d love to let Gidgit go when she’s a little older, but I live on protected wetlands with lots of frog eating predators. The thought of her becoming lunch for one of the many herons or snakes makes me CRINGE. I guess I’ll play it by ear after winter passes.

BTW.. love the frog pics!

Don’t let her go. she will never survive. She will ether get eaten, frozen by winter when it comes or just die from all of the stress.

oh honey, don’t worry. I won’t do anything to hurt her.
I probably should have left her in the wild to begin with, but I saved her from being lunch to a beautiful ribbon snake.

Instead of just moving her to a different location, I brought her inside just to observe her for a few days....well, I got attached.

Normally, I look for herps, mammals, and birds, photograph them, and move on.
Try it sometime if you can, Dana. See how many different species you can identify right around where you live. As a matter of fact, there’s a cool website eNature with lots of field guides, pictures, etc...

You can even make and keep your own list on enature of different animals, birds, insects you’ve seen in your backyard habitat. It’s a LOT of fun! If you do, let me know, we can compare enature lists,ok? I’ll show you what’s outside my home in North Carolina, and you can show me what you’ve seen outside your home in New Jersey.

Oh Dana, I don’t know if your mom will let you or not.
Why not wait for awhile. You already have the frogs, the newt and I forget what else. That’s quite a bit to take care of! That’s the advice I would give to my son,(He’s 15 just a little older than you. )

Enjoy the little guys you have, there’s plenty of time down the road to get into breeding.

oh Dana! I’m not crazy about spiders either, but it’s just a picture! LOL

Go on and start your own list, even if you don’t use the website. It’s a lot of fun to go out there and see how many different species of animals you can find and identify. The best part is, you don’t have to take them out of their homes to enjoy them!

So far I have 130 different critters on my list and that’s without really trying! Let’s see how many you can come up with this weekend. You already found the salamanders in the back of your grandmas, there’s a start! How about it? Use the enature website to identify the different things you see, just type in your zip code and it will show you all the creatures that live around your area.

Most importantly, just have fun!
