 Pacman frog help..

My little Meatball is burrowing. The temp is around 70 at night and 85 durring the day. I dont think he is hibernating. Well, could he be? Or is he just mad at me. I went out one night which i never do and when i got back he was hiding and has been ever since. lol Its like he got mad at me for not being home when i normaly am. lol I always thought that the temp needed to change to low or two high for them to hybernate. If you know why my little Meatball is burrowing tell me. Should i be worried? Oh yea he has been eating 2 crix every day and 1 mealworm on days i dont feed crix. He has been eating every day up till him burrowing.

The temperature should fluctuate a little bit but 85 is a bit warm and 70 is a bit chilly. Try to keep it between 74 and 81 or so. I feed mine every other day about 6 or so dusted crickets, they should not eat everyday. Other than that burrowing is normal, just keep him moist and he will be happy.

well heres the thing. My meatball is about 2 months old and the size of a 1/2 dollar. At this stage of life i should befeeding him every day to keep up with his extreamly rapid growth but as i noted its not alot every day( also the crix are dusted). The thing i couldent understand is i had another pacman who in all 3 years i had him he never dient eat, and he never burrowed like this guy does. My other on is also kepts at about the same temp but he eats 10 crix every other to every 3 days, with the occasional fish and pinki mouse.

His burrowing isent like his normal burrow tho. He is as far down as he can get (2 1/2 in). And when i uncover him to look his eyes are shut and he seems not to notice i uncovered him. So i cover him back up and water down his cage. I just dont get what could have caused him to do this. or am i freaking out for no reasion and this is just him being a pacman.

Horned Frogs (Pacman frogs) are burrowers. This is totally normal. If you have one that never burrows, I’d be more worried about that, in all honesty. Your daytime temp is a bit too high, and he may be burrowing to get out of the heat. A daytime temp of 80 is about right. But, essentially, they just do that sometimes. And I think you’re reading waaaay too much into your animal’s behaviour to interpret this as "he’s mad at me".

haha yea i think your right. and i said 85 as a temp because it can get up to 85 it is usually about 81-82 durring the day on one side of his house and 75 on the other side. and at hight its 79 on one side and 70 on the other. so if he feels like it he could have moved a few inches over and been in a coler zone. lol This show the tru nature of just how lazy they are. lol

as for my other pacman. He burrows but not all the way down to the bottom of his house he goes just enough to be albe to eat if he sees my feeding tweesers comming down. that to me is normal. lol

But yea i think im freaing out because i had another albino pacman that died after 3 months of me having him. So any change in this guy and im saying to myself "DONT DIE!"

Like Ferdale said, they are natural burrowers. It’s just their natural state, being ambush predators and all. Probably, he’s burrowing that deep to regulate his temperature. 85 is too warm, 70 is way too cool. He’s probably burrowing because the substrate is cool during the day, and retains the heat at night. My guy is buried up to his eyeballs most of the time.

He probably shouldn’t be eating every day. 2-3 crix every other day until he’s bigger would be better. The meal worms you feed aren’t alive, are they? I’ve heard horror stories of meal worms eating their way out of a frog -- primarily because they have such a tough exoskeleton they can survive the stomach acids for a while before being digested. Poking meal worms’ exoskeleton with a pin and pinching off the heads are recommended if you’re feeding live meal worms.

But, in other words, don’t worry if Meatball is burrowing in. If he’s still eating, and seems otherwise healthy, he should be fine. Each frog has his own personality. Just because Meatball isn’t like your other paccy doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with him. In all likelihood, he’s just fine.

Now that I’ve said that, watch something bad happen... (<--sarcasm!!)

Balfrog-- just one quick correction. The "meal/superworms will eat their way out of a frog" is an old urban legend. Don’t worry about it. Too many mealworms can cause impaction in certain animals, but they’re perfectly safe to eat live.

I know it’s an urban legend. But my vet told me not to feed live meal worms for that very reason. He said that mealworms are hard to digest and if I did choose to use them to poke them with a pin before feeding.

Balfrog, do you actually poke a hole in mealworms before feeding it to you frog? I always wondered how necessary this is. I don’t give mealworms to Kiwi but I do feed her kingworms (superworms) sometimes. These supposedly have less chitin in their exoskeletons than mealworms. I usually give her the ones that just shed their skins and are very soft. But I’ve given her the normal skinned ones and she’s always been fine. With the mealworms, when you poke a hole, does anything nasty ooze out? The idea just freaks me out. Long story short, I had to do a bug collection for biology in 9th grade and as I was pinning a semi soft bodied insect, and the pin broke the body...and well...ew, on top of that, I caught a huge jerusalem cricket and the teacher said I had to gut it b/c it was such a large specimen and would rot if I didn’t. I had my brother do it of course, but the whole experience makes me want to gag when it comes to squishy bug insides. Hope nobody was reading this at lunchtime.

Nah, I don’t actually feed Fat Chance meal worms. Seems like too much trouble -- and live ones are nasty! I only give him crix, with an extremely occasional pinky mouse. I have given him canned meal worms before, but a small can was $5.00, and always went bad before I could use them all. I’m just saying what my vet told me about meal worms.

Bug guts are a delicacy in some countries...

yea i heard that too cept with bearded dragons lol...and i crush their head with the tweezers before i feed. It makes the worm thrash. But yea i wokr him up a little while ago and he hoped around and ate a cricket then went back in his hole and threw some dirt on himself lol he’s so cute. :)

ooh hey if you put to mealworms in the fridge they hold longer and dont kill the worms. they go into hybernative state and to feed warm them up and they start wiggling again. I have a can of 50 and ive had ot for a month with only 3 worms turning into beetles.

but thanks for the advise guys. I’ll just keep a watching meatball and if anything comes up im ganna freek out and post again lol....i just dont wanna loose this guy. I miss my old albino :(

 Pacman frog help..

I got my new paccy yesterday.
It actually has been eating unlike alot of posts that I have read about them not eating at first.
It ate 2 crix the day that I baught it one before I even left the store and the other one about 6 hours later. Then it has eaten 3 today. I read on another post that they should only eat 3 or 4 every other day is that true.
Also I read a post that the little paccy burrowed way down . Mine is doing that. before tonight it would just burrow half way down with its eyes sitcking out. When I got home today it was completely covered up I had to dig the substrate up just to find the little guy. It is just a little but bigger than a quarter. How long should I leave it alone? the tank is about 75 to 80 degrees and the humidity is 80%.

my paccy still hasnt moved sinc last night. i uncovered it today to make sure it was still breathing. It is still completely covered where unless you knew where is was before you wouldnt know there was an animal in the tank. How long should I let it stay that way? COuld it be having a delayed reaction to being moved? I did put it into a way bigger enclosure yesterday.

That is normal. My Pacmans do that all the time. I would just leave it and if it doesn’t come up in a day or two then check on it again. If its alright then just make the substrate nice and damp.

JUMPING FOR JOY

Just thought I would let everyone know that my little paccy was out when I came home tonight. I fed it a couple dusted crix. I think one was too big cause it couldnt get it in its mouth all at one time. But the seconf one was really small. But now I dont think I will worry so much about it burrowing like that. I was just afraid that I freaked the little guy out too much.

Do they squeeze the crix when they eat it? When my eats the cricket it swallows then its body goes skinny then it blows back up. That was pretty neat. I have a digital camera that takes video so I taped it so my boyfriend can watch it.

I think they do kinda squeeze the food into place/ stop if from moving. When mine eats there eyes go back in to here head and the get skinny then fat again.

Thats kinda neat. I am not much in watching an animal eat something live but this is different. When I fed mine lastnight I nothiced that it gets skinny then it blows back up. It even kinda wipes its mouth to get it all in. I noticed today that it moved half way across the tank. It is not burrowed down as much as it was you can still see its head. Would it burrow when it gets too full? It did eat everyday before it burrowed.
