There’s a great debate about that. No one really knows whether or not if pacman frogs need UVB. Some say not, some say yes. I don’t know for sure. I find my pacman’s color is brighter when he’s exposed to UVB. It’s up to you whether or not you want to use UVB.

mine has never had it, and is now 6" and has great colors. i think it is not necessary at all, but if you wanted to do it, a low intensity light would be what you wanted. a reptisun 2.0 would be more than enough. i have always read them to be nocturnal, which means absolutely no UV is necessary, and i have had great luck without wasting my money on unnecessary lighting.

Actually, they’re not really nocturnal, exactly. Mine, anyway, is active day and night. But they are live on the forest floor, usually covered in leaf litter, which would allow them precious little expsure to sunlight in the wild. I don’t personally use a UVB light with my horned frog.

i have heard the ornates specifically are active day and night, by the way, what is the technical name for animals active day and night? it cant be nocturnal or diurnal. maybe omnural? just a guess. but like you said they are on the forest floor which doesnt get much light to begin with, and they like to be burrowed, as most of us have observed. what exactly is ’active’ for a pacman? i consider mine active if she is plopping around in the corner of the tank after i clean it. i can hear it since she is only on water, not any other substrate.

if you want to use commercial bedding, the only option in my opinion is shredded coconut(eco-earth or bed-a-beast). more ideally i like to use wet paper towels. they are easy to burrow into, hold moisture well, and have no risk of imaction. they are also easy to clean and tell when they need to be cleaned. when i use wet paper towels i dont even need or use a water dish, although they wont mind if you still want to use one. as far as lighting goes, as long as he can tell when it is night and day he will be fine. his tank should have an ambient temperature of 80F. this is most easily done with a low wattage heat lamp(infrared is best so you can keep it on at night too). diet should be varied as much as possible, and although many people say rodents should be used as an occasional treat(if that) i dont seem to have problems when it is no more than half their diet. large goldfish can be used as the rest of the diet. nightcrawlers are usually loved. these are a moderation of the methods i have used to get my ornate pacman to 6" when most books say they max out at 5". mine has taken live small feeder rats(not babies, small adult rats) although i dont suggest this. at most a prekilled adult mouse is the biggest rodent you should probably feed a pacman.
