 Ouch!

My garter bit me when I was putting her food in her terrarium today! It really surprised me since I handle her a lot and she’s never bitten me before! Has anyone else been bitten when feerding their garter?

When I went to my snakes cage to hold my snake, it hid behind the plants. As I put my hand toward it I thought I felt something funny like a little shock on my hand. I thought it bit me, but I wasn’t sure. Usually when I feed it, it tries to bite the fish net when I move it and when I put my hand in , it tries to bite my hand. I think it’s because my hands and the net smells like fish after I touch the net!

Try feeding your snake in a different tank. It will begin to associate the "feeding tank" with feeding, instead of your hands. Right now, every time it sees your hands they might contain food. With a feeding tank, it will only make those assumptions of food when in its proper surroundings.

Found out that thing about getting mistaken for food is a myth. You may get bitten if you have just handled food or if your snake has a regular feeding day. On feeding day, I don’t put my hands in the enclosure, if I can help it. They just seem ready to strike anything that moves. Also found out moving your snake to a feeding box may stress the animal making it more prone to a defensive bite or a regurgitation. My baby garter bites me every time I pick him up.
