Aggressive snake
What’s the best way to aclimate my snake to being handled? I have only had him a little over a week and have only handled him twice. The first time he was understandably nervous and struck at me once. The next day when I tried to pick him up, he came at me full force and struck at me repeatedly until he finally latched on. Should I wear gloves for a while or will he always be that aggressive?

Aggressive snake Yes! Wear gloves, and maybe even a heavy jacket. You should wait at least 2 weeks before handling it, so it can get used to it’s environment, and so it could start eating well. There are many ways to tame a snake, but not all are successful. Try to hold it in cold morning so that it could get used to you body heat and become more attracted to it. That’s one easy way, to tame it, but like I said not all are successful. Some snakes are aggressive. It is just there personality. Also try handling it more often to get used to you and so it will know you mean it no harm.

lol, its not a rattlesnake. Garter’s bites don’t hurt that much, especially when they’re babies.
The best thing to do would just be to keep handling regularly. I just let my snakes bite me, because it doesn’t hurt, and they learn that I don’t mind it, so they stop. Except for the occasional nip, they don’t mind my hand that much.

Aggressive snake I’M SO SORRY!! At first I thought you were talking about a bigger snake, but I forgot we are in the garter-ribbon snake section. So yeah, you can just wear gloves if you want to. Usually you wear a thick jacket when your working with bigger snakes like pythons, boas and sometimes medium snakes like corn snakes because they are known to have painful bites, but with garter snakes, not much to worry about.
