 Garter conservation-success!!!

hey everyone, i just got sooo excited about this, so i really need to tell you all.

ok, over the summer last year, i decided to try an experiment. ok, so i’ve noticed that all the snakes around my area have almost simply vanished, and for a while, the only snakes we had were the occasional shy ringneck and my snakes that i own, but i wanted to find out what it was that was cuasing it. i had noticed that a new family of hawks had moved in around the time of the snakes dissapearence, but not too long ago, we found all of them (red-tails) dead, like something ate them. thats another story, but anyway, last year, june of 2006, i rescued five garters from my aunts house (another story also) and i decided to bring them back to my house for study. they were two easterns and three checkereds. each one around 14 inches long and very thick.

i decided to conduct an experiment. i would release all five of them in my yard and see if i could find out what was happening. well, things looked bad for a long while, untle just three weeks ago.

it was cold, and it was bright and sunny, so i though, maybe i could go outside and check for one. sure enough, on a tilestone basking i found one of the easterns! he/she was fat, probably had eaten a toad, since our yard is overrun with them. anyway, i got really excited and i captured it. it was a male, 16 inch eastern. the one i had named jiroh. he had grown three inches and was in very good shape.

about a three days after that, my brothers came screaming into the house looking for me, and when i went to go see what it was they had seen, i saw one of my checkerds, so i captured it and brough it in for a quick study. it was a 13 inch male checkered and he was the one i had named Lee. he had not grown much, but he sure was full off of whatever he ate! i ended up keeping him with my other checkerd who was a female named Noodle for breeding purposes. i will most likely not release him, only because it is about winter here and i’m not sure that it would be a wise choice. he’s now a breeder.

i was astonished to find that it had worked. i am only 14 1/2, but i feel really excited about this!!! it’s really cool and i just had to share it with all of you here on repticzone!!

Cool story. It is always neat when you have success with the wildlife in your backyard.
BTW, if you live in Massachusetts like what your profile says, than you dont have checkered garter snakes. The farthest NE they range is Kansas.

Happy herping,
Josh

no, i’m only new to this forum! lol, been on repticzone awhile now. thats what i was thinking, so it’s weird....still trying to figure it out myself. we have a small population around here, but when i say small, i mean tiny! lol i don’t think anybody really has them documented up here...idk, maybe they were easterns, but i’m pretty sure they were checkerds... again, idk. i’ll have to investigate.... yay!!!! lol

Its always great to hear a story like yours. People tend to just lok at the bad and not see that there is hope. Plus its great to see humans and nature coexisting. Im 14 too, so Im glad to hear there are others.maybe when your checkered garters give birth you can release the babys. How did you get all those garters anyhow?

sick! yah, i was thinking maybe i would do that, realeasing the babies. anyhow, i have three garters at the moment. i bought my red sided, i rescued my eastern (her name’s noodle) from my uncle who hates them (huge horror story there :( ) and the checkered i have ( named Lee) is one of my experimental ones. he’s one i released and captured. now i’m just studying how he looks compared to other wild ones from other areas and trying to uncover some stuff about them that could maybe help boost their numbers around here. lol, i love this stuff, and no, for those of you who might tell me not to release him becuz he’s been captive too long and it might hurt the smaller population, don’t worry, i’m not going to. he may become a breeder for now.

thanks for taking interest in my post everyone! ( oh, and another reason i have so many snakes is that my family is crazy and i’m constantly buying new herps! now i have 13 [6 snakes-7 lizards] herps!!! lol)
