 Need to know!!!(male or female)

As some of you already know I have a ribbon snake and I need a name for it, but I also would like to know if it is a male or female.I could name it a non-gender name, but it would be better if I had an idea on the gender. I have heard that you have to look at the tail, but I would like it if someone can explain, or post a photo on what they mean. I know that I could also get it probed, but I don’t want to take any risks on hurting it. This is one question I can’t seem to understand. Please help ASAP!

Garter snakes are sexed by one of three methods:
By visual appearances - male snakes have a thicker tail base where the two hemipenis lie. This can be seen, even in juvenile garter snakes, with practice.
By probing - a surgical probe can be inserted into the vent on either side of the mid-line and gently moved pushed towards the tail. In a male, the probe inserts several scale-lengths inside the inverted hemipenis, whereas in females it will stop at around 2 or so scale-lengths. This technique should only be used by those experienced in the technique as it is easy to damage the snake.
By ’popping’ - this technique involves gently squeezing the tail base, with the result that in a male snake the inverted hemipenes are everted, and become visible as they ’pop out’.
This technique is only suitable for use on young snakes, and again should only be used by those experienced in the technique, as damage can easily be done

Yes, I know those methods, but I don’t want to take the risk of hurting my snake. The pet store where I got it probes them, but they said that this can hurt the snake and can cause damage. But thanks for the tail info! My snake has a long skinny tail. I guess it might be a girl? I would like to post a picture, but I can’t get them on. Once I do I’ll post it.

I have looked on the caresheet for ribbon snakes and most of them said that the male has a longer tail than the female. I’m so confused! I heard that the female has a longer tail than the male. Which is right? Please help!

Ow, I forgot to add one last thing. Does it depend on the species?

You can’t tell the sex by the tail all the time, it isn’t 100% accurate. The only real way you can figure the gender is by probe. Probing is pretty simple, and it isn’t that hard to do. I would give it a try. Watch this: Link

I just saw a video. A lady said that girl ribbon snakes have a horizontal slit above the vent where the waste comes out from, and males don’t have one. Is that true?

I think he means a horizontal slit above the waste vent, not the waste vent itself. I’m trying to sex my snake, too. Keep posting.

Yes, that is what I meant. Not the slit where they poop, the slit above it. That one lady said that the slit means it is a girl, and all I’m asking if it is true?

Okay! I hope that lady was right because my snake has a horizontal slit and I thought it was where the sex organ came out from.

K, this is strange. For ribbons I have no idea but you might want to find out from a more reliable source and not some person on youtube.

For my garters, I took pictures.

Luna (female)

Eclipse (male)

As you can see, the female has the vent, one layer of dual scales, then two single scale rows, then all dual. The male has all dual scales after the vent. This may just be coincidence, but it might not. If anyone reading this has a known female check to see if this has happened to them.

How interesting. I love the color of your snake! Anyways, my snake does have a slit above the vent. I would post pics, but unfortunately, my camera isn’t working, sorry. So does your female snake have a slit above the vent? I can’t seem to see one in the your pics.
