 Just some questions

My little boy has a common garter from NE Kansas( yellow stripe down back with orange on sides and black spots). We started off feeding it earthworms, but now that it’s cold outside we’ve been getting minnows from the pet store(it’s still quite small maybe slightly bigger than a pencil now and they seem to be the only thing small enough) Is there a limit to how much we should let it eat? We put 6 in the water dish a couple weeks ago and it ate none. I put in 9 last night and there are only 3 left. how often should we feed it and how much.
What is the best way to clean it’s cage and what cleaner should we use. any other helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My garter book is ordered, but has yet to arrive. Thanks alot!!

 Just some questions

Well, for starters, welcome to the forums! What your son has would be a red-sided garter snake. It would be best to switch the snake onto pinkies, as they have more nutritional value than a solid diet of minnows. For now, try around 4 every three days or so. To clean the cage use a cleaning solution of 95% water and 5% bleach to clean the whole cage about once a month. Spot clean every day by just checking the cage for dry feces. It’d also help if you could post pics of him and the cage.
