Vitamin deficiency in fish First, what vitamin(s) do fish lack? Can you pour the multi vitamin powder with the fish to somehow create the vitamins in the fish? Sprinkling the water bowl with it? Thanks, Alec

Vitamin deficiency in fish I don’t think it’s a case of fish lacking vitamins. Goldfish and rosy red minnows contain an enzyme, thyminase, that breaks down thymine. Thymine is one of the B vitamins and when it gets broken down by the enzyme, it’s not available to the snake. I don’t know how much vitamin you’d have to add to have too much for the enzyme to break down (I’m also not aware of a straight thymine supplement, and you would need to know how much you can give without overdosing the snake). I’ve heard that cooking / boiling the fish denatures the thyminase (makes it inactive).
You can try feeding fish such as mosquito fish. To the best of my knowledge, they do not have thyminase.
Fish are not really the best staple. Petstore feeder fish are frequently treated with antibiotics and antifungals and animals fed these fish could potentially be poisoned. Instead of fish, you can buy night crawlers at stores that sell live bait. Or the best option, get your snake to convert to mice.

Vitamin deficiency in fish I am trying pinkies right now, but my Mom (gosh mom...) accidently (sure) threw them out. So new pinkies will come soon. I’m sorry to report my other Checkered Garter snake died...sniff...He was doing well and everything seemed good. I looked at him after my Mom took him out, but It looked like he had blood in his mouth and before--my mom told me that he had some reptile bark pieces in his mouth. Maybe he choked? It’s probably my fault so please understand that I am at a loss and I did everything I could do. Maybe it wasn’t enough.
R.I.P Stubbz
Thanks, Alec

Vitamin deficiency in fish My little garter will eat anything, live fish dead fish, pinlie mice and now, new on his list pieces of chicken. I have a greater appreciation now for garter snakes, especially since it’s so cheap to feed them now. Sorry to hear about Stubbs. Mine is in the same aquarium as my bull snake and they get along just fine. They sleep together and thats as much as they do together. Donnie the bull is 3 feet and had him since he was 18" and now the garter who I am gonna name Spot, because the line in the middle of his back has a missing yellow scale to make the line whole, instead is green scale. To have your snake eat dead fish, just wriggle them a bit like the jumped out the water and bam, SUCCESS!!!

Vitamin deficiency in fish chicken is too fatty for most snakes and will probably higher bad cholesterol and eventually kill them. pythons/anacondas can eat chicken, but the chicken would have to be whole and live, not cooked/fried chicken. i have a small corn snake with my garters but i wouldnt recomend putting a 3 foot bull snake in with it or any large snake with your garter because one day you might find your garter missing-and your bull snake with a full stomach.

Vitamin deficiency in fish Yesterday I happened to buy a fairly large fuzzy rat for my bullsnake and went downstairs to watch tv and came back and found skinny 18" garter swallowing it. Looked like a ananconda scene. I was standing by incase he chokes on it, but he swallowed the whole thing. When I saw that rat alive I would of nevr thought that would of happened, especially the size comparison. I took some pics for proof but don’t know how to post them.
