just remember to quarentine every single one (if you keep them in groups, colonies, and even alone) because chances are, they are most likely wild caught, if you catch it or buy it.
either way they may have a contagious disease or parasite, or even RI. your whole colony could get wiped out that way (i learned the hard way).

although once i found out i had an infected eastern ribbon, which was with another eastern ribbon and eastern garter. both ribbons got infected, one unfortunately died,(the other ribbon did live) but the garter snake was completely fine. that, i concluded was a species-specific disease.

still, quarentine them.

 Questions on Garters?

okay.... most snakes including ribbons and garters, do NOT eat insects.
their main diet is frogs, toads, tadpoles, minnows (NOT goldfish though), sometimes mice, and worms.
pinkies are not fish. he means pinkie MICE, also known as *newborn* mice. most garters and ribbon snakes do not eat pinkie mice straight away, so you do this thing called *scenting*. you rub a minnow or guppie onto the newborn mouse to get the mouse of a fish smell, then feed the snake the mouse. after a few feedings of scenting the mice with the fish smell, the garter or ribbon will probably get used to the mice and eat it right away without hnaving to scent it.

here are the prey with the most nutritional values, in order from best to worst-

1. pinkie mice are the best feeders if your snake will eat them because they have the best nutritional value of all the other prey items.

2.minnows, guppies, rosy red minnows, and other minnows are the second-best feeders because minnows and guppies from the store usually don’t have parasites, and the snakes eat them less reluctantly than pinkie mice.

3.frogs and toads are the third best feeders, because they can have lots of parasites if you catch them from the wild, but have a good nutritional value to the snake.

4. the fourth-best feeders are tadpoles. they can have a heavy load of parasites but are also good in nutrition.

5. earthworms are the fifth-best feeder, mainly because they can have alot of parasites eaten when they eat soil and don’t have great nutritional value. some garter and ribbon snakes will completely ignore earthworms, too.
