both are great, ive only had one ribbon that i got for the misses but the ribbon was just way to hyper for her, couldnt handle the ribbon at all, she would snap and bite every chance she got so i gave her to a friend to take care of and got the misses a ball python. i also have a garter that isnt near as hyper but he does put up a fight when you first remove him from the tank but has yet to snap at me.

thats just my experience, ive heard many people say they have ribbon snakes tame and others say they remain hyper all the time. if i were to get one id have to go with a garter.

as for tank sizes i hear a few people say a 10 gallon will be fine its whole life but i keep mine in 20 gallon long tanks, right now i have one in a 40 gallon i built from a old TV and he uses every inch of the cage.

i think garter snakes are better than ribbons. as already stated, they are alot more hyper than garters. garters do get larger than ribbons in length and girth though. garters live longer, are alot less fragile than ribbons, and usually eat more readily and more varied diet.
i’d keep it in at least a 20 gallon long.this is better than a 10 gallon because it greatly decreases the chance of RI because the snake is able to spread its whole body out more.

i would go with a garter honestly..they are more easily to get onto pinks for example... I have a ribbon here at my moms in the states....my step dad kept him on a fish diet..and while I am visiting im trying to get it on a pinkie diet...must ssay...its pretty hard....i assist feed him a pink, he will take it..the spit it out...he only eats so much of it..so I acn only give him the head of a pinkie...he eats it fine..but not on his own. Not to mention he was..and again is being treated for scale rot (this is what happens when someone doesnt clean the cages while you are at your dads house!) So I now am going to bring the ribbon snake up with me to Canada....in a sock. sounds horrible i know but its the best way to keep it alive..my setp dad cant care for it properly..he "forgets" about it alot. so i say a garter snake. much calmer then ribbon

Though I personally favor the ratsnakes, which of coarse includes cornsnakes. They are great pets, and great beginner herps to!

I had a recent clutch this summer.
Garters are live bearing so they are easy to breed. But breeding season for garters and ribbons goes from late Feb. - Summer, sometimes even into fall. Since garters are live bearing they dont have a hatch /incubation time, but they have a gravid period of about a month or more.
