 Breeding easy as...

For those who have bred both, is breeding cresteds about as easy as breeding leopard geckos?

Yes, they’re about the same. The incubation temperature is lower for the eggs however. Once the pair has bred, or been together for about two months, then you’ll need to seperate them again.

They can overbreed and become stressed out, just like leopard geckos.

if they are not separated and do not have a cooling off period [period where they are neither breeding nor laying eggs for at least three months] they could both become very sick and possibly even die. when a male is with a female he cares more about breeding than eating, so sometimes he will forget to eat, or give up his portion to his mate. so he will become really malnourished and skinny and other issues that go along with that

the female can become completely depleted of calcium causing her to break bones, give off very sick young, and eventually die [if you NEVER separate them, but generally speaking they get really sick after about a year and that is when everything goes down hill from what i have heard/read, i haven’t had that experience thank god! ]

i have heard of people who keep their breeding pairs together all season, and separate them in the winter without problems, because they literally cool them which is why it is called that [they keep the cage around 65 for three months or so] but you have to have the ability to do so. i personally do not because the weather in texas is insane. we had snow two days last month, and two days later it was almost 80* so i have no way to literally cool my female because i can not rely on the weather, so i separate after a few months. lol, i know my male hates me for it, but he definitely benefits from it! and he will be getting enough girls this year anyways now that i have three females waiting for him!

and the females retain sperm for quite a while, so it won’t just be one mating one clutch of eggs, it can be one mating = 12-18 eggs [six to nine months of sperm retention depending on the female!]
