 Getting a Cresty!!!

At last my parents have given up trying to stop me and I allowed to get a reptile! On one condition, no live food. So, I went fine I’ll get a Cresty! I’ve saved up and am building a viv. and preparing to get one.
Any advice anyone??

if you are not feeding any live food you need to make sure you feed crested gecko diet made by rapashy. do not just feed it baby food.

you should have the cage set up and keep the temp and humidity right for 3 days to a week before you get the gecko to make sure the gecko will be able to survive in its new environment. they are nocturnal so you will not see them out and active in the day time

another animal you cold look in to that does not eat live food is a Uromastyx. they only eat vegetables.

thats all i can think of for now but if i think of more ill come back later. i gtg

I would actually recommend a uromastyx over a crested, if you’re not able to provide live feeders. Though feeding live insects isn’t necessarily "required", I personally feel a diet without them is inadequate. Feeding crickets/roaches provides healthy mental stimulation and an instinctive hunting behavior. I feed all of my geckos crickets at least twice a week.

Just my thoughts,
K

congratulations! i would definitely say get the CGD, baby food is really bad for cresties either way, especially if it is your first reptile and you don’t know how to properly supplement the baby food, which is still difficult even if you are an "experienced" reptile owner! there are also two types you can get! i would say for feeding, mix enough up for a couple of days [you can refrigerate it for up to a week when it is been mixed with water] and you can use water bottle caps as feeding dishes, i do this for a group of hatchlings all the way up to a single adult and it works out great. do make sure that you have a water bowel because they will and do drink from water dishes, and i have noticed mine like to occasionally sit in theirs for a while when they are close to shedding [usually my gravid girlie]

as far as the crickets go, i don’t think it would do anything harmful or stunting in any way to have a crestie who doesn’t get crickets, i know a few breeders who don’t feed crickets, i myself only give them once a month i even have some who refuse them, and have stopped eating them all together, lol, they may just be weird, i don’t know, but they refuse to eat them and have for about a year now and they are completely healthy.

what type of set up are you doing?

not feeding crickets is fine as long as you feed CGD that is a meal replacement diet. i was saying do not just feed baby food because that does not have enough in it.

i just mix the food every night. i use a 1/8tsp measuring spoon and do 1 scoop diet powder and 2 scoops of water. it only takes a minute to mix it and this way it is fresh every night for them.

a milk cap works very well for a food dish. they are nice and shallow too.

Unfortunately, I just don’t quite have the space for a Uro. It is a considerable option but is not likely, it’s taken me years to convince my parents to just alllow a little cute thing!

guido, i didn’t think about mixing it every night! lol, Adderman, that would be better if you are only getting one or even just a couple! i just mix up enough for about four days because i have more than ten to feed each night, so that is why i said that.

Hi, thanks for the insight!
I was thinking of making quite a wide yet really tall viv. with loadsa platforms and bamboo canes for it too climb. Probably that reptile carpet stuff as a substrate. Loadsa plant life and stuff [I hear that they love Fig {?}].
Any good??
I’ll probably slip it a few live feeds every now and again as a treat aslong as I can hide it form the parents!!

If you start out with a hatchling, be sure that you make the viv smaller and less crowded so the baby can find its food...

I have to fall in with Xpantherx on this one. Even though I use CGD with my Cresteds, I still use dusted crickets a few days a week. I don’t know if it’s absolutely necessary (as CGD is supposed to be a complete diet) but the geckos sure seem to appreciate it.

Besides, watching them hunt and devour crickets is half of the fun of owning them. They’re great little hunters and will do acrobatic tricks to catch a cricket.

I totally agree. The hunting and seeing an animal doing it’s natural thing is not only good to watch but good for them. Unfortunately it could prove problamtic in my house, but I will definitely sneak a few hunting ’sessions’ in.
