 Zazu’s vet trip.

Thursday morning at 8:00 AM, i am taking Zazu to the vet because i think he has worms. i got a container from my basement and rinsed it out really well. i drilled some holes in it for air. does this sound ok?

i was going to take a fecal in but i called the vet and he has to see the lizard before he can give me meds. i need to get a fresh fecal. how can i do this?

can i put him in the carrying container with some fake plants Wednesday night so i don’t have to catch him early in the morning? then he would also have a fresh poop in his cage when i take him in.

i weighed him today and he is 8 grams, he was 5 when i got him :) my scale rounds up or down to the nearest gram.

if i think of anything else ill post it here. i need help as to what to do.

i am thinking of also keeping him in the carrying case while i am treating him with meds. this way i can also have plenty of time to clean his cage really good. the carrying case that im putting him in to take to the vet is 9x14x6" high. i have another just like it but 12" high instead of 6 that i think i will use to keep him in while i am giving him meds. would this be okay or would it stress him out too much being kept in a cage so much smaller than the one he is in now.

i didnt really make it clear why i am taking him. i am not just guessing that he might have worms. i am taking him because i saw the worms. i have a picture of them.

the round white thing is urates and the stringy white things were moving in the water so i am guessing they are worms.

oh honey, i’m sorry! i think putting him in there over night and for treatment should be fine. while he is sick the smaller enclosure will most likely make him feel more secure while going through the traumatic experience of being treated with medication. i would also take the picture with you, he may be able to make a diagnosis with that picture, but i would try to get the freshest poo possible. and when you have to give the medication, you may need someone to help you the first few times, and you may have to "pry" his mouth open depending upon the type of medication, just make sure you don’t use anything metal because you could break tiny teeth in his mouth, and possibly damage his jaw.

i hope everything works out!
keep us updated!

thanks i will. so should i keep him in the 6" tall or the 12" tall one?

i still have those worms frozen in water in a plastic bag. i plan on taking those too. if i can ill print out the picture also.

i was thinking if i feed him and let him spend the night in carrying cage he will poop in there and i can use that sample for the vet.

ill keep you updated. thanks for the info

the 12" would be better for a long period of time, but the 6" might be easier for the car ride, but i think honestly either one would be fine because he is still pretty small. thats good that you froze them! yeah he should poo over night, but sometimes they like to wait until you have just left the vets office! so if he hasn’t pooed before you get there ask him if you can bring one up [that is if he even needs it once he sees the worms]

keep me updated on the progress!

ok thanks. i am planing on using the small one for the vet trip then the taller one for keeping him in while im giving him the meds.

since i already have to clean out his nice display cage i am going to make it even better by planting it instead of the fake one i have in it now.

 Zazu’s vet trip.

awesome! i have almost every cage naturalistic, lol with the exception of the newly hatched of course. but yeah they are really good. make sure you put a drainage layer at the bottom [i just use gravel, i boil it first so that it is sterile, but i get the big bags at home depot when i have to re-do them because i have a 50gal plus three other cages] then put the substrate on top! lol, the first natural tank i made, i didn’t do this and the whole cage became a swamp! it was terrible, and then i had crickets breeding in it... it was just a mess!

oh and make sure that you rinse off the plants before you put them in, that way no pesticides or other chemicals get transferred to your tank.

you have to post picture when you are done with it!

ill post pics dont worry! what do i put between the gravel and the dirt? i was thinking gravel, then some mesh, then dirt with plants planted in it. then maybe some leaf litter. with some logs and stuff. and i plan to get an African giant millipede top go in there too. it will be an awesome showcase cage.

 Zazu’s vet trip.

yeah, if you go to home depot, and go to the window treatment area, they have some screen you can get to but between the two but make sure that it has a plastic coating on it or else it will rust. you can also get some construction mesh, those are completely made out of plastic. the leaf litter sounds awesome, and the mili should do well as well, they eat anything that will cause mold, and they will eat the CGD as well! i don’t have one because they kind of creep me out a little bit, but i have been thinking about getting one for my community cage, and they are supposed to be great! what size is the tank that you are going to put them in together?

bromeliads are great plants and they look great as well! they are pretty and my cresties love to sleep in them between the leaves, sansiveria do really well as well and they are really strong. also, just make sure that nothing is poisionous because they do tend to munch on the softer plants sometimes. if you want a list of safe plants i can look one up for you. i have one saved on my computer somewhere...

 Zazu’s vet trip.

here is one of the plant lists i have, i got it off of pangea, but i have another one on my computer at home, but i am about to give a presentation so i am not with my computer at the moment. i hope this helps out!

Bromeliads:

*Aechmea fasciata (Urn plants/Silver Vase Bromeliad) – Large

*Billbergia nutans – (queens Tears) partial shade to bright indirect light

*Cryptanthus zonatus (Earth stars) – warm, humid, bright light

*Guzmania lingulata – warm, humid, bright light

*Nidularium – 12-15 inches, low to Med. Light

*Tillandsia – Air plant, warm & humid

*Vrisea splendens (sword bromeliads) Light shade

~Other Plants:

*Acalphya (copperleafs, chenille plants)

*Adiantum (maidenhair ferns) – cool and dry in winter

*Aglaonema (Chinese evergreens)

*Alocasia (elephant ears) – must be kept moist, humid and warm, will either not do well or overgrow everything

*Asplenium (Bird’s nest fern) – moist soil, up to 3 feet high

*Bamboo - (live or dry) please the the Wikipedia article, way to much interesting info to list! Clippings will produce.

*Beaucarnea recurvata - (Ponytail Palms)

*Calathea zebrine - (Zebra plant) – moist moderate temps, moderate light

*Ceropegia woodii - (Rosary Vine,Hearts entangled, or String of hearts) Water thoroughly, and then allow the soil to completely dry out before watering again.

*Chlorophytum - (spider plants) – average humidity, moderate light, should be allowed to get almost dry before watering

*Cissus - (kangaroo vines, grape ivys)

*Crassula ovata - (jade plant, friendship tree or money plant) Clippings will produce.

*Cyrtomium - (holly ferns)

*Dracaena - (Dragon plants)

*Ficus (rubber trees, ornamental figs) Direct light works best. Use caution with any plant of the ficus family that has a "milky sap" when leafs/stems are broken, it is a skin and eye irritant.

*Maranta - (prayer plant) warm temps, high humidity

*Peperomia – (radiator plant) some in this family are an epiphyte or air plant. Clippings will generally produce.

*Radermachera sinica - (China Doll)very difficult to root, Growth slower used by nursery, will grow fast and less bushy.

*Sanseveria - (Snake Plants)aethiopica, caniculata, kirkii pulchra, parva, pinguicula, sinularis, thyrsiflora & trifasciata

*Scindapsus (Pothos) – look like philodendron, very hardy. Clippings will produce.

*Spathiphyllum (peace lilies) – keep moist.

*Tradescantia zebrina - (wandering Jew/ spiderwart) Can cause skin irritation in humans when handled frequently. Clippings will produce. Called inch plant because it can grow up to an inch a day!

****WARNING*****
Do not use plants listed below.

Dieffenbachia – All parts of the plant are poisonous, due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals

Philodendron- All parts of the plant are poisonous, due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals

I hope all goes well at the vet!

Philodendron is fine, I meant to add to that thread, but never did. Pothos has oxalates as well, since they’re in the same family, but as long as the herp isn’t herbivorous, it’s fine. Rubber Plants (Ficus elastica) I generally try to avoid.

You can also add species of Christmas/Easter cactus, all fern species, Orchids, Tillsandia, Pilea, and I’ll add more if I can think of them.

 Zazu’s vet trip.

They’re both fine with crested geckos. Many plants have oxalates for protection, though some have less than others. As long as it isn’t in with a herp that’s continuously eating it, everything should be fine. In mammals, high quantities of oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth, though in herps, they can lead to calcium deficiency. They are also present in broccoli, kale, and spinach, of course in small amounts.

I use pothos/philodendron for my cresteds without a problem.

A great creeping ’vine’, if you don’t want to use philodendron or pothos is Pilea - Creeping Charlie. I think it’s fairly hard to kill :)

Good luck!

pin worms are the most common. They can get them from crickets. Panacur is the safest drug they give out for worms. Wondering what the dosage she is giving and his weight? Ive never seen a 4 week treatment.

LOL that is my plant list (the first one) Its still in progress. I was hoping to get people to add info to it and give feed back on plants they have used in there tanks. Also The list is intended for feeding crickets in the tank. So I was listing plants that are not safe for crickets to be munching on then have the cresteds go after. Also to clear up the confusion about the philodendron vs the pothos. They only LOOK a like but are a different plant. if you do not feed live in your tank they are each fine. If you DO feed live then it is best to stay away from the philodendron. =) Ive done some work on the list since that one was posted. once I get a few more plants I will make a post on its own for the list if you guys like.

it is .07 ml of the diluted mixture once weekly for 4 weeks.

S. - Pothos also has oxalate crystals, as does arrowhead plant (S. podophyllum), and philodendron. They’re all in the family Araceae. However, the amount to which they do is reasonably small and shouldn’t cause a problem.

I also hope Zazu’s treatment goes smoothly. Afterward you may want to add some L. acidophilus or other biotics to his diet so the antibiotic won’t go over so harshly on his digestive tract. I suppose a new source for feeders is probaby in line too :(

I was wondering about that. I was told that one had more than the other but was unsure and since I was told it was bad and could not find anyi nfo telling me that they were okay I put it on the bad list just to be safe. TY!

I was thinking it had to be because Zazu was so small. When you told me that he had worms I did a fecal on the ones I get from her and they were all clear. So maybe they were in a later batch of crickets. One after I got my guys. Sorry you had to go through this, but great work getting him to the vet asap!

well im glad to hear yours didnt have it also. i am going to get a roach colony so i know where the feeders come from and what they have been eating.

right now he is still in the 9x14x6"high cage, today i am either moving him into a 9x14x12"high or a 18x11x11"high.

how much airflow do i need in the cage? i drilled 5 holes on either end near the top. is that enough or do i need to do more to it for air flow?

i think thats it for now.

thanks,

A picture would be best so we have a better idea how big the wholes are...

I will see if I can get some picture of my tubs so you can see how I do my holes in them for air and simple misting. Most like you will need more holes. Try some holes on the side as we,ll if you can, this will make for more circulation in the tank.

i know alot of people who also put screen on the lid [cut out an area, and use hot glue to put in place, make sure all ends are outside of cage so that the little one doesn’t get cut, then for aesthetics you can glue construction paper over the lose ends of the wire/mesh] i havent ever done it, but i have been thinking about it with all the hatchlings.
