 New gecko cage.

i am getting a full grown crestie sometime this week or next FOR FREE!!! all i have to do is pay shipping :)

so here is the tank i made so far. i will be adding more plants to it and also a big rock that i found on vacation that i am putting in the back right corner. it is still at my aunts house in wisconsin because i could not fit it in my suitcase. so i have to wait till she comes here this summer and she will bring it :D

so here is what i have made so far. what do you all think?

the plant is a 6’ fake vine plant that i got at petsmart. i will be getting some more plants from the craft store because they are bigger and cheaper.

there are 2 mopani logs. one in the back left corner and one in the middle. the vines are wrapped around them.

the substrate is bed-a-beast.

the food dish i use a 1 oz plastic cup turned upside down so it is elevated a little. you can see it sorta in the bottom left corner under the leaves right side up in a 2 oz one which i use for a water dish.

 New gecko cage.

on another forum i go to the guy said he was selling it for 30$. he bought it for his wife and she lost interest and he doesnt have time for it along with his tegus and he likes the tegus more than the gecko. so after a few weeks of it being 30$ he said its free to a good home. so all i have to do is pay shipping. ill post pics of the gecko in its new home as soon as i get it. he is shipping it on monday so ill be getting it tuesday.

on another note im taking zazu back to the vet tomorow morning to see if he is over his pinworms. he took all his doses of panacur good and i am hoping he is over them. ill let you all know how that goes too.

i did not have a fecal to take so we still dont know if he is over the parasites. the vet was a little worried that zazu isnt eating much but he said that sometimes the panacur can make them eat less. he gave zazu a shot of fluids and wants to see him again in 2 weeks if zazu still isnt eating and in 1 month if he is. but i am going to be weighing zazu and if zazu is gaining weight, eating fine, and the fecal has no pinworms, i wont be taking him back in 1 month i dont think. i dont see a reason to take him back if he is gaining weight and has no more pinworms.

wow this is costing me allot! around 90$ for this vet visit!

thats not too bad actually, last time i took my izzey in, she got a fluids and calcium shot (just for precaution because she had MBD when i got her... lol, i actually think the vet just did it to charge me for it ) it cost me nearly $200!!!!! but i had my other female with me too because i take her in regularly for check ups since she is breeding.

wow! my mom is kinda upset that we have spent as much on vet bills as we payed for the lizard itself.

do you think its necessary to take the new gecko im getting to the vet? i will if i see somethin wrong like what i saw with zazu but i wasnt planing on taking him once i get him just to make sure he is well.

I normally do my own fecal tests on all my geckos. Its very simple and much cheaper than getting all my new/old geckos into the vet for a smear or flotation. You just need a microscope and a book called "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Rodger J. Klingenberg DVM. There is also an advanced copy of this book that I have an order in for at the moment.

If you can convince your Mom to get you the Microscope, (tell her you could make this your next science experiment/school project or something) you can get the book on amazon. I would get the book first so you know what you are getting into. All and all it should run you less than 200.00 and if you consider that each fecal test is gonna run about 30-60, then about 50 for the office visit (depending on your vet), it pays for it self fairly quickly when you have a gecko fetish! LOL =)

There is a page in the book that has a medications page. Most of the medications can be purchued at a feed store. But you may have to buy them in doses for other animals and figure out the dose for the size of your reptile. There are only a few that you would need to go to the vet for like flagyl but you can take your slide with you and most vets can just look at the slide and then give you the meds with out charging you for the fecal exam.

The microscope you need is a standard X40 magnification total ( a x30 with a x10 eye piece will do it). If you want to do flotations (a smear will cover most things) you need an oil immersion lens as well.

Here is a link that will help you figure out most doses for meds and other useful things as well.

WOW your vet bills are expensive compared to mine! The vet only charged me $15 for a fecal exam and the panacur for my MHD. But mine only knows the basics about reptiles though, fecal exams, shots, MBD and some other stuff. But I am helping him learn more about reptiles.

What kind of shots did your vet give???

And yes, reptile vets charge a lot more because they do tons of extra schooling. The vet board is considering not allowing normal vets to see reptiles, it should be voted on this year. There are so many cases of vets killing reptiles because they don’t know what they are doing 99% of the time. Its generally not a great idea to take a reptile to a vet who normally only sees cats and dogs. I took my old corn snake into a vet a long time ago and she was all..."I wont see a snake unless you milk it first". That was the last time I went to a not reptile specialist.

The vet only gave my iguana a calcium shot before. I do have a reptile vet near me but when I called them and asked what they would do with my animals they were going to do the exact same thing that this vet did but for 5 times more, and my parents don’t like that vet. My parents are the only ones who have a say in what vet I go to. :(
