 Please Help!

We have 4 crested geckos 2 males kept with a female each. This evening we heard a thud and Tara was writhing about on the floor of the vivarium, my husband lifted her out (getting bitten in the process something she has never done before)) and she calmed down but has tremors in her legs and cant walk properly. We have isolated her in a seperate viv but suspect MBD. She is about 50 grams and was introduced to the male Angel about 6 to 8 weeks ago, they get on really well together but the last couple of weeks has been hiding alot. She has an egg laying container and the warm end temps are 23 to 25 celcius she is fed on crested gecko diet mixed with fruit and crickets both dusted with calcium. The other cresties are all fine and showing no problems at all, we have had the oldest male Angel for almost 4 years and they are all kept and fed in the same way.
Why has just Cordelia become ill and what can we do for her? Her front legs seem swollen but she has no kinks in her legs or tail and her jaw is firm ( and she can really bite!) Please help us we have never had this happen before in all the years we have kept reptiles, how can we get her well again and prevent this from happening again, Cordelia is our little girl and we want to get her well.

well it sounds like she’s getting plenty of calcium, but have you checked her calcium sacks recently? that’d be the best way to check for a calcium deficiency. what types of fruit are you feeding her? have there been any changes in that recently? have you ever had problems with pesticides and produce in your area? you said her legs were swollen, are there any cuts or marks? mating can be a little violent.

i would take her to a herp vet, or if one isn’t available, just a regular vet. if i had to guess it sounds a little like poisoning, but as i only have experience with cats and dogs in that regard, i don’t know if it would be the same in reptiles.

We have tried to check her calcium sacs but cant get here to open her mouth do yu guys know the best and gentlest way to get her to open her mouth so we can check?. I guess there might be a problem with the fruit as we have changed supermarkets recently and the fruit may have a different origin.
She has no wounds of any kind which is a good thing, but her appitite is really poor and she only took a tiny amount of crested gecko diet and a little drink this evening which is really unlike her.
We are really worried and can get hold of a vet tomorrow morning, we just want our little Cordelia to get well.

i would not mix the cgd with friut it is a complete diet by itself just mix it with water

also for now i would add a little pure calcium powder(no phosphorus or vitamin d3) to the mix to make sure she is getting enough

is it possible he might have hurt her? i know you said they get along but you cant watch them 24/7 and he may have hurt her trying to mate or she may have hurt herself while trying to get away from him

what size tank are they in?

if you check pangea reptile, they give a recipe for how much CGD to feed when you’re offering fruit as well. i really dont think there is any problem with feeding fresh fruit, as long as they’re getting CGD as well. its the baby food that you have to worry about, because they tend to eat only that and give up the CGD. i believe quite a few breeders offer fruit and insects along with the CGD to give them a little variety. just make sure you dust the fruit with pure calcium.

theres a video on youtube (search for : crested gecko- gaping) that shows how to check the sacks, although i just hold them firmly but gently (they do not like this) and then rub and tap the sides of their jaw. it can take a little persuasion, and watch your fingers, one of my males always tries to bite.

she said she mixed fruit into the cgd so i thought she meant baby food
plus fruits are high in sugar so i still personally wouldnt do it on a daily basis

The MRP Base may also be used in conjunction with fresh fruit, babyfood, and fresh honey to create a complete diet or supplemental diet.

its under their two part diet, but i’m glad you mentioned because after reading it again i realized it states at the end

These are only guidelines, and if using this method, careful monitoring must be used, and results may vary. Use this method at your own risk.

so i think that unless you’re a fairly seasoned keeper its better to stick to the regular CGD. a little fruit here and there probably isn’t bad, but adding it to the regular diet which is already flavored might be a bit much.

ok i did find that part

but i figured since it is only for experienced owners most people wouldnt be ableto monitor everything correctly

which is probably her case if her girl does in fact have mbd

so she should stop the fruit imo b/c obviously her girl is lacking something or has extra of something if she has mbd

:)
