Questions about my new crested gecko

I went to the pet store where I bought my crested gecko, and the lady said that they would not have any repashy cgd for a week. I have been feeding her crickets and crushed peach and banana. It has been about 4 days and I have been spritzing her enclosure accordingly. But tonight I did the pinch test and noticed that she is a bit dehydrated. I gave her an extra good spritzing tonight, but I would love any advise I could get as I am a new owner. Also the lady at the pet store said it is not a good idea to use any other repashy diet as a substitute until the cgd came in? I am worried about her getting the proper diet she needs in the meantime. Thx =)

Questions about my new crested gecko

diff owners will have diff opinions.

I was reading a document the other day from someone with the same level of experience as Repashy himself and he reported fruit baby food works just as well. I’m pretty much a new owner myself and haven’t yet tried Repashy cgd itself yet. I have recently been using a red banana/mango mix... crestie not touched it yet as still new, so yet to pick up an apetite. But i saw no harm in it as it’s probs just the same sort of stuff.

But i guess you can’t go wrong with 100% fresh mushed up fruit :) If you have the time and patience, i would assume this would be the best all round? Just mix in some nutrobal and a little pure calcium and what could be better?

Have a google on their diet, there’s loads of info!

Baby food is a definite NO. I don’t know who the "experienced keeper" is, but any well know person feeds Repashy CGD. Back in the day, geckos in the wild ate rotting fruit and such and so people thought it would be a good idea to give our geckos baby food (easily canned, cheap, fruity, and the geckos loved it). However, geckos were becoming deformed, females were destined to have MBD due to the lack of calcium and nutrients after laying eggs, and all sorts of health problems popped up. While baby food is in fact "fruit", it is made from crappy fruit with loads of sugar. Fruit in the wild is unfertilized, not steroid pumped, and filled with natural nutrients.

Allen Rephasy spent thousands and thousands of dollars to conduct hundreds of nutritional test on geckos to create just the right formula of protein and fruit based foods. These are loaded with calcium, protein, and other important nutrients your gecko needs to live a long healthy life. It is a all-in-one diet. You don’t even need to feed them bugs as the formula has protein incorporated in it. People that agree that baby food is a good food choice are outdated. You are directly putting your gecko at risk for MBD and other nutritional deficient problems. It is also economically cheaper. I have over 70 geckos and I buy a 4lb bag of CGD for 50$ every few months.... do you know how many cans of baby food I would need to feed 70 geckos at .89 cents a can!

Studies have shown that Repashy is MUCH healthier for your gecko than mashed up "fresh fruit". Our "fresh fruit" is not all that fresh. It is fertilized, steroid packed, and generally lacking nutrients your gecko needs. Unless your going to fly to New Caledonia and pick some fruits off trees, your gecko is not getting the full nutrition it needs.

Do your gecko a favor and get a bag. While you may not see the bad results of baby food for a while in your little guy, it will happen eventually. Don’t wait until then to switch over to Repashy.

Thanks. Clearly mis-guided. Have been having a read up on enzimes in active fruit and the importance of that along-side repashy. I’m guessing the document i was reading could more than likely been a very few years old :-/ Since cresties haven’t been in captivity all that long, i see there’s still yet lots to be discovered and the true experts out there are few and far between.

Ive been told by a well known breeder that Repashy is the only way to go.

If you cant get repashy- please get some calcium powder and dust the crickets with it- you can keep your gecko alive short term with it. I get my food from Gecko Ranch and it gets to me in 3 days (Im in the same state)- two weeks is a pretty long turn around- unless you are in the UK.

I use 2 part so I can change out flavors- but really- its not needed. Floyd seems to like the strawberry best so far.

I am completely with Ento on this. A base diet of Repashy with a few crickets once every 7-10 days or so is all any crestie needs. Baby food doesnt have enough micro nutrients. Rotting fruit has bug larvae in it and other micro nutrients that our sterilized, pesticide full, sugar added baby food doesnt. Personally, I wouldnt feed most baby foods to my baby.
