 What’s compatible with my GG

I currently have a fully grown golden gecko in a 20 gallon tank (tall) with a bunch of plants. I want to put another lizard like a long tail, or an anole but i don’t know if they would be compatible. Have any ideas, or other critters i could put with my goldie?
That would be great, thanks!!!!

Do not do this.

If you absolutely must put another gecko in get another golden and put them in a 30 gallon. Problem is i guaranteee your golden is a male and if u want a mating pair you will need to go to a pet show to find a female.

I have heard that you can mix tokays with Goldens and am currently doing so now. Wondering about if this is true or not need to know they seem to be fine right now. They are in a 30 gal tank a tall one so plenty of room i think, any feed back would be great.

Thanks

I personally wouldn’t house a goldie with a tokay, especially when a 30 gal tank is too small for both. Goldies need 20 gallons minimum and tokays need more. Tokays also, I believe, outgrow goldies. Both are a territorial lizard so putting them together will definately promote an outcome in the future (anything from watching one bite the other to waking up to find one dead).

And if they haven’t attacked one another by now, then it’s probably because there’s not enough space to call out even territory. Look for territorial signs like one laying on the other, one not moving much from a certain part of the tank, one constantly dark, one not eating, biting, both being extremely jumpy or flighty if you open or disturb the cage, one or both being easy to catch (this is indicative of them being very ill or in shock), and more obvious signs like tail dropping, wounds, missing toes, etc.

A huge bout of ignorance from many people is that mixing species is fine if both are still alive and unharmed. But you also need to consider internal injuries and mental stress. Goldies and tokays are wildcaught alot of the time and many petstore reptiles (because of this or simply the reptiles being in the room with other wildcaught lizards like anoles) have a load of parasites. Even if they start out with a small parasite load, the stress from being in constant company with eachother will increase that load tenfold til the geckos get thin, stop eating, and/or die a horrid death. And that’s not even bringing up what the territorial stress from seeing one another can do. I’ve also known people to boldly tell me, "One will chomp on the other’s snout and push him, but neither are hurt in the end. It’s just cute!" Which can tell me alot about what the lizards are going through.

Remember the reptiles are not mammals. They don’t love one another, they don’t make friends, they canabolize their young. Yes you could hypothetically put a male and female goldie together (provided one doesn’t get killed) and if one dies, the other may show some random sign of mourning... But it’s mostly due to the change in the habitate, not any love they shared.

spiffy =] I say leave the tokay to the 30 gallon and get your goldie a 20 (or another 30. The bigger the tank, the happier the gecko will be).

I found all geckos are costly in one way or another, specially the more difficult ones like the goldie and its cousins (tokay and marbled). My goldie has sucked so much cash from my wallet that it hurts to think about it XD

If you’d like some tips to save some cash, I have them. Such as using Bed a Beast instead of those bags of bark because it not only holds the humidity easier, but also is half the price (or just buy a huge bag of peatmoss for cheap at a flower shop, but peatmoss can get moldy very quickly and ya gotta avoid fertilized stuff.) You can also get 6 ft of fake pothos vine for three dollars at a hobby shop compaired to the fake foliage at the petstore that’s smaller and 10+ dollars. You can ALSO go into a wooded area and pick up some freshly fallen sticks (or trim your own tree. Never get bark that’s been on the ground for a while and avoid termite-covered sticks), then boil or bake the sticks for a good while to remove bacteria and bugs. It beats buying those expensive logs at the petstore as well. =] Hope this helps.

meghan, i have 2 tokays and 2 goldens, not in the same tank, and i know for a fact that, although they may seem fine now... your tokay will attack the goldens... tokays are very agressive and the fact that nothing has happend means either one, or both, are sick... my male tokay will bark at me for just going neer him... i wouldnt trust your tokay. even my female tokay who is very nice and tame, i wouldnt trust her with the goldens... my male golden is about 9 inches and my female is about 8... my tokays are 12(female) and 13(male)... i just wouldnt risk it
