 Gecko colors

hey i’ve got a golden gecko, and i’ve had it for about 4-5 years. I’m not sure if it’s male or female. I actually have 2 things to ask. One how can i sex it? and also about it’s colors, I’ve read they can change colors and I’ve seen mine do that. Do their colors signify a mood they’re in? or is it more for camoflauge. I was just a little curious because mine changes from gold to a dark purpley color sometimes. It seems fine, it’s in a 20 gallon tank with reptile dirt and some fake plants and a hide away log. so i wasnt sure if it was stressed or something based on colors. thanx and srry if i seem a little unprepared. i got it when i was younger and the petstore didnt kno much, so i’m hoping i’m provinding it w/ a good habitat.

Male goldies are golden in coloration while females are a move olivebrown. You can tell sex if you look at the crotch area. Males have two balls at the base of the tail and a V on the belly with dots on it. Males also have a pink bulge they’ll expose if you poke him in the crotch and they try to crap on you in defense, but I dont’ recommend messing around with that method =P Females are also hard to find in stores and usually cost 40+ dollars more than males.

They go dark due to stress, temperature, or camoflague. It’s usually stress as the gecko feels threatened easily and goes dark brown to hide. If it goes black, it’s terribly stressed. Temperature is easy enough. If it’s on the warmer side, the gecko will be a brighter color of yellow, if it’s on the colder side (or uncomfortibly cold) the gecko will be a little darker, but not much. The Camoflague is easily explained. It goes dark or light depending on what he’s against and if he wants to hide.

Sade, my goldie, will hunt in bright golden coloration, then when he grabs his food he runs off to another part of hte tank and goes a dark color. It’s odd and funny with no obvious explination of the first three. I think it’s more mood with that one.

20 gallon is the minimum, but it’s not too small. I like to assume that bigger is always better and if you ever find yourself face to face with a cheap 30 gallon tank, it wont hurt to upsize for your gecko. =]

k thanx, yea i’m always looking for bigger tanks, but the petstore near me has ridiculous prices but the tanks r no good, in fact i’m actually going to start working there even though it stinx, but i wanna b able to do something about the conditions they keep the animals in there. I’m not an expert or anything, but i take advice from this site, most of it is usually unanimous so hopefully i can fix up the animal cages there. but anyway like i said i do look for a 30. also Geico is a dark gold right now so i think it’s fine. i’m working on sexing it, since i’m waiting until it’s on the glass, i dont wanna grab it or anything since it’ll stress it out. thanx for ur help

Remember that fish tanks are alot cheaper than those reptile tanks. You could be paying 60 for a 30 gallon tank and lid instead of 150, for example. But it all depends on where you go, I guess.

Check out thrift shops too. Sometimes you can find good deals.
