 Other species?

hi, i work at a petstore, and i had a question. The manager there has a golden gecko and a tokay gecko together in a cage... now i kno for some things mixing species is bad. but i wanted proof that mixing those 2 were bad b4 i said anything. So should a tokay and a goldie b separated? I wanted to b sure, thanx

 Other species?

A previous member talked about how they had a tokay and goldie together since hatchlings (though I couldn’t imagine how. The tokay would most definately outgrow the goldie and if either was male, they’d fight.) But I couldn’t see how it could happen. I even once tried to put a goldie with a cousin species - the marbled gecko. I was forced to seperate them because, even though they were different genders, the golden gecko showed territorial displays aside from biting. One was always dark, one laid on the other, the marbled gecko got to the point where she couldn’t leave one part of the tank without the goldie getting upset. Sometimes the goldie was so stressed that he didn’t move much, either. And when I put my hand in the tank they either freaked out from the stress and flung about or didn’t move at all from being in shock due to the stress. Once they were put in different tanks, their personalities really changed for the good.

In the store I bought the geckos from, they housed a FEW goldens and marbled geckos together. The geckos weren’t killing eachother, but they had no room to claim for individual territories and compete. In the end they were all considerably stressed, some were missing toes, and others were thin.

Stress will undoubtedly happen - and since many golden geckos are wildcaught, the parasites would explode 10 fold. Stress always yeilds to sickness, disease, and a large parasite count - regardless of their origins - so you need to watch out.

A third worry is the golden gecko having very delicate skin. If you hold the goldie and it twists the wrong way, it can literally tear its skin under your fingers. Now imagine a tokay over-powering it one night and not only biting, but taking the tail or tearing a major rip of flesh on the way. Then you’d have to deal with infection and seeing the vet.

See, I can’t even imagine housing two goldies together more or less cousin species. There have been members in the past who have housed breeding couples together, then the male kills the female or the female ’dies from a mystery’. And since most goldies in petstores are male, it’s hard to avoid the problem.

It doesn’t matter if they aren’t fighting, it’s that the tokay will not allow the golden to eat, or they will eventually get into a fight. It is better to separate them before anything like that happens.
