I just got 2 new Geckos.... But

My mom just bought a turtle and 2 Golden geckos. But we dont know anything about the Geckos. We wouldnt have gotten them as we dont know anything about them, but we couldnt take the turtle without taking them. Now the guy who was selling them said he had 2 golden geckos, a 55 gallon tank and a turtle for sale. So when my mom went to go pick up the turtle she got to the kids house and his mom took her to a room in the back of his house were the creatures were. She was only gonna take the turtle but the woman said her son was only gonna sell the turtle if my mom would take the geckos and tank. So my mom took one look at the turtle and said shed take them all. The turtle and the Geckos were all living in the same tank. The turtles head was flaky and dry. The shell was dry also and the bottom was all rotten. The poor 3-toed turtles nails were long, dark brown, and deformed. So you can see why my mom took them all. Hopefully. Anyways I was wondering how you can tell whether the Golden Geckos are male or female? And can stay together in the same tank without fighting if there are plenty of hiding spots? And my last question is how can you handle them without getting bitten or having their tail fall off or hurting them in anyway?

Taylor

P.S- sorry I lied that wasn’t my last question, Does anyone want the Geckos?
We named them Fred and George. If their both boys.

The goldies cannot be in the same tank as the turtle as turtles and torts carry very nasty diseases that they will transmit to geckos (and any lizards) if housed in the same tank. All it takes is the geckos coming into contact with the turtle or the turtle’s feces.

The geckos will not be happy together and if they are both male, like they usually are in petstores (males are usually 10 dollars and very easy to get while females are rare and cost 4 to 8 times as much), they will fight to the death or stress to death from being in eachother’s company.

You can’t adopt off or sell stuff on RZ unless you do so in the classifieds forum. Contact the webmaster and ask how. You could give the geckos away to a petstore or call up the aspca and have them take the geckos. They’ll put the geckos in a wildlife/herp/etc center or adopt them off.

If you are forced to keep these guys, they’ll need at minimum a 20 gallon tank each. Loads of tank accessories to hide in or around. Humidity needs to be around 75%, temps need to be 80 to 85F at night, 85 to 90 during the day. Not handleble as they stress easily and have delicate skin. Stress very easily. Very stubborn and if they refuse to eat, they can attempt to starve to death. Goldies are a species of gecko for intermediate to experienced keepers, so be prepared for this.

The males have the golden coloration, females are more olive brown. Both genders can turn dark brown to near black if stressed considerably. Males also have two small balls at the base of the tail, an open V vent between their back legs, and have a pink buldge they can expose from the crotch called the hemipenis. Females don’t have any of those added features.

And don’t be fooled, even a male and female together can end up in tragedy. There were a few instances on this very forum where someone put a male and female together for breeding purposes and the females died of ’mysterious circumstances’ or were all out killed from the male getting territorial or too fiesty.

The geckos cannot be kept in the same cage as the turtle. I find that the most obvious way to see their gender is by their colour... my male is often very gold whereas the females are darker brown and sometimes green. Also, check if they have to lumps either side of their tale... if they do, they’re male. If they are both male, you cannot keep them in the same cage because they will fight. You can keep two females and 1 male and 1 female together, but never two males.
Many people find that you cannot handle goldies because they bite, but mine arent like this atall. I found that if i gradually started holding them, they would get used to it. Start of by just putting your hand in the tank without touching them. Do this every so often for a few days. Then try gently stroking them... and then gradually start holding them. This way, it won’t be so sudden for them.
