 Some questions

I am considering getting a golden gcko. I was wondering how you would rate them as pets. I heard that they smelled and just wanted to double check. If i were to keep one in an aquarium would it get really spasy and run out the top? (since therre are no sidde doors)

 Some questions

A golden gecko is a difficult gecko to take care of. They are usually wildcaught and, therefore, full of parasites. They are related to the tokay and will bite very badly. While cheap to buy, golden geckos are very expensive to setup and maintain a tank for. They stress easily, have delicate skin (so should not be handled), and are stubborn. By stubborn I mean that if they are unhappy, they will literally try to starve to death. A percentage of goldies will attempt to do this. Mine starved himself for two to three months and became near skeletal from parasites before I was able to save him, deworm him, and, after a load of forcefeeding, get him to eat on his own. Another member in the far past had their goldie starve itself for a full year before it was taken off forcefeeding to eat on its own.

The golden gecko will try to escape no matter what. Once your goldie escapes, good luck getting him back. You have to be absolutely sure where it is in the tank before opening the lid as they are very smart for a gecko. If you grab the goldie, provided its healthy, it will twist, bite, crap all over your hand, and attempt to drop its tail. Be prepared for this.

Lizards have no smell. It’s what you feed them and what you put in the tank that reeks. Crickets, for example, smell far worse than mealworms. The tank will also fume from the feces if you do not spot-clean the tank once in a while and change out the substrate every to every other month.

Even so, if you’re prepared for the costs, commitment, and difficulty of the species, they can be a wonderful display species. Goldies, after a few months of getting use to the tank, will come out and show such great character as well as impressive hunting skills.
