 New Golden Gecko!

I was up at the Petco looking around and then I saw this little sticky that read "For Adoption" I looked up to see what it was and there was a little Golden Gecko with no tail. I went up and asked why he was up for adoption. The guy told me it was because he was way to hyper to hold. I asked the guy to hold him for me while I went home and did some research. Turns out I already had all the stuff I needed except an extra light which I got from the store. Needless to say he is now mine. He is a male. I checked on here for care sheets and learned how to tell so I’m sure he is a male. I will get a pic up later.

I think the goldie was for adoption because the tail dropped. Goldies are not handle-friendly and the only time they would be is if the golden gecko was sick. They have delicate skin that can rip if they squirm too much as well. So if you get a goldie that’s not handle-friendly, will squirm when held, will bite, will crap all over you, or will try to drop his tail (which is no longer a problem, is it?), then you’re getting a normal, healthy goldie as far as I’m concerned.

The next time you randomly get a high maintenance gecko, please hold off on insta-adopting/buying and set up everything a week beforehand. If you see a gecko in a store for free, tell them that you’ll take it but need to set up everything first and they will hold it for you. This will give the poor guy less stress and give you a chance to know what you’re stacking up against.

Good luck. Make sure the goldie is in a room well away from any other reptiles you may own and kept in quarenteen for 90 days + a vet visit.

Parasites and Disease. Many goldies are wildcaught or farmbred and can come with a host of nasties in them that they can and will give to your other lizards (through something as simple as you putting your hand in his tank then poking around the tanks of others.) The vet visit will rule in or out parasites and you can take the 3 months to take care of that. Some diseases and parasites wont show up til after month 2 of a quarantine (like crypto, where the lizard becomes lethargic and starts vomitting/crapping blood towards the last but more noticable stages).

Keep it as a rule of thumb that any parasite in a lizard can infect any parasite in another lizard. Same with reptile to reptile. Some parasites that are indigenous for some reptiles may be absolutely deadly to others. So therefore any new reptile you get should be kept a room away from other reptiles and treated in quarantine to prevent a spread.
