 Breeding problems!

I have three goldies, one male and two female. The other day, i found what i think was an egg. I didn’t touch it but it looked as if it was stuck to the wall. It wasn’t hidded at all and was in the open. I thought the best thing to do was to just leave it and they could look after it how they wanted. The next day, i looked in and it had gone. I’ve looked all around but cannot find it. Maybe they’ve hidden it really well, or is it possible they they’ve eaten it or something? Any ideas or tips on how to prevent this? Thanks x

 Breeding problems!

They will lay eggs with a cement-like substance to walls and sticks. If you think a goldie is pregnant and close to laying, put paper on all the inner walls or put in removable sticks and remove the eggs when they have been laid. Do not tip or rotate the egg in the process as it will destroy the yolk inside.

If you cannot remove the eggs, tape a plastic cup with breather holes over them so the geckos will not come into contact.

The goldies will be territorial over the eggs and/or females and may attack you if you come close to them, or at least get a little harpy about it. I had a haphazard incident years ago where the female laid eggs and the male would not let me anywhere inside the tank without attacking me extra-nastily. They have since long been separated due to dominance.

The goldies also may eat the eggs or walk on them. While the eggs are hard to remove from the walls, they are easy to break. All it takes is the gecko walking on the eggs and they’re done for.

I must give you a small warning over golden gecko dominance. There have been incidents on this very forum in the past where the female ’dies of mysterious circumstances’. This was especially true if the tank they were in was too small to begin with. Having three in the same tank is asking for problems as one of the females will eventually become dominant over the other due to food, territory, and being gravid which will lead to food and territory issues. The smaller or weaker one will loose out. It has happened.
