On his last legs?
He isn’t super skinny yet...I had a thread about a month ago here wondering if he was actually overweight (and apparently he was/is) and he doesn’t seem to have lost much weight since then, but he’s just not eating. The thing that really caught my attention was this morning I looked in his enclosure and noticed a big chunk of shed skin just sitting on the bottom of the tank. This strikes me as very odd because he has *always* eaten his shed except for this time. Now here’s where I’m stumped. I’ve had him for around 4 years, and when I got him he was already full grown, and I’m pretty sure he was WC so I have absolutely no idea what his actual age may be. I also have no idea how old goldies can get...I’ve done a little searching online and I’ve read that they can get to be 5-7 years, 10+ years, or 20 years old. Now if it’s just his time to go then I’m okay with that...I realize that everything can’t live forever...I just had to think that there may be something I’m doing or not doing that could be affecting him. If anybody has any thoughts on this I’d greatly appreciate it. |

How long hasn’t he eaten? Have you gone to the vet yet? Sometimes insects carry parasites (especially crickets) that they’ll give to your lizard, like pinworms. The vet check will rule this out. The vet can also teach you how to forcefeed if it comes to that, which is something you need a professional to teach as you can break the jaw or rip the skin of the reptile by accident if you do it on your own. I forgot what I’ve last said to you in previous threads, but have you considered moving the tank to an even more secluded area of the house? Somewhere that gets barely any traffic and the tank is away from any windows. He may not be eating due to stress as well, which is a common problem. Something going on that’s making him unhappy. A heat change, more activity than usual, something new you’ve done with the tank that’s upset him. |

First off I have to say that he’s back eating fine...A few days ago I put a few crickets in there, and by morning they were gone...he’d also eaten the couple superworms that I had in a dish in his enclosure. He also ate a couple crickets last night again, so I think he’s back to where he should be. I’m also still working on getting him on the cockroaches since i hate having stupid crickets around all the time. Nothing has changed with his enclosure recently, and already he’s in the quietest room in the place...my reptile room, and is in a corner away from the window. I’ve read that goldies can live to be quite old...the reason I thought of age as a possible issue stems from the fact that he was a WC specimen and was already full grown when I got him, so age has always been an unknown with him. Anyway, I’ll keep you guys posted if anything changes...for now I’m just happy he’s back eating again. Thanks! |
