 Need a substrate alternative

Hello everybody !

i have had my golden (KING) for about 3 years now, he is very healthy and pretty tame. he enjoys a delicacy of exotic insects and frequently battles for dominance of his cage.

what i need help with is a new substrate.

I am honestly tired of changing dirt, and cricket supply is so much responsibility, i need an easier way to upkeep my gg.

I have honestly considered putting him up for adoption, but i know that something i can’t do. It’s just that lately the responsibility has been a little more than I can put up with. I dont like to constantly have to go into the dirty pet stores to get crickets and i dont exactly like the idea of breeding smelly crickets in my garage, having them chirping up a storm.

Ive tried putting his cage in different parts of the house, but it just bugs me, i mean i like having him close, but the dirt and the hot light and moisture just make me feel like its unsanitary. I want to move him into this 100gallon fish tank so i can build a forest for him, but i think thats just more dirt, more unsanity, makin me crzy

i guess my best bet is to do that and put it out in the garge and breed the crickets in the cabinetry below it, wait dont crickets need air flow?, if so that means theres no way to contain the noise?

I want to use something other than dirt, i know sand wont do and he could survive on paper towels but i KNOW he doesnt like it.

Any suggestions out there? i could really use some help in this- me and my GG’s time of need

thankyou

I’m confused on what you’re exactly asking for. I’m hearing three things: Crickets, dirt, and location. Are you asking for where to put the lizard tank or the cricket breeding tub? Is the dirt for the crickets or the lizard?

Being dirty is part of what owning a lizard like a goldie is all about. Dirt or no dirt, the goldie will still mark the walls of the tank as well as the ground, so it’s a lose lose battle. But if you really hate digging dirt from the bottom of your tank, you could do what I’ve been doing for ages: taping a cut up plastic bag to line the bottom of the tank, then adding the dirt on top. I usually go for the larger plastic bags (to provide better coverage). This way dirt removal consists of un-taping the plastic bag from the tank walls and lifting everything out like a diaper. It will take some practice, however, and you may not like taping and untaping. Another solution is using a more expensive pet store bark substrate - but the goldie could ingest some and die. The only way to successfully go about using bark substrate, in my opinion, is teaching the goldie to eat from a cup.

If you don’t like crickets, switch to breeding superworms, mealworms, or roaches. Roaches are the most prolific and best of the bunch, superworms eat one another and need to have hydrational food items at all times to prevent this (they also need to be separated to successfully pupate), and mealies are the in between. Mealies and supers you can leave in a cup in the tank without escape chances.
