 Thinking!!!

I am thinking about getting one of these. I was just at petco today for my other animals. when I saw that the golden gecko’s were only $13.99 and they looks pretty cool, and at the other petstore they are $29.99 no idea why though. So i need to know the following before i even think about purchasing

-Substrate
-Cage size
-Humidity
-Temperature

thanks in advanced
Please respond

subtrate. i have the green carpet which is good. food can’t hide and it help moisture also. works great.
cage size. i would go with at leats 15 to 20 gallon for space. 10 gallon will work while the small.
humidity. high but about 60 -80% they keep good color. about 90 mine stayed stredded brown.
temp 85-95 duing the day and at night maybe a drop of 10 degrees . basking lamp need to be red or blue so they get the heat but there not blinded. they more active a night time so you can leave the red one all night . 20 gallon long tank will give them a hot side and cooler side the can move to from a please. great pet if you dont want to play with everyday. i tried that they stay stressed. so they good to have just talk to and given it a home away from pet store.

The ones that are less than 15 dollars are usually wild caught or farm bred, and therefore come with parasites. The ones that are a little more expensive are either straight from a breeder or have been given a vet check/deworming before being put out to view.

They are a pretty tough species to take care of, stress very easily, and are stubborn. Most pet store golden geckos are male, as females are much more expensive (talking 80 dollars here). They are also known to try to starve to death if stressed or generally not happy.

I don’t agree with the last post. The tank has to be 20 gallons at minimum, 30 is better, bigger is better than that. This is a species that will get to be a foot long and will have to have plenty of room to move around and hide. You should not be handling them at all as they are a display species (and have considerably delicate skin), and it’s not all that recommended to have more than one in a tank, as even females can be territorial.

Look at the caresheets on this website made by DragonD. CroBiatach, and myself. That should give you all the general info you know to set up (our caresheets are not the same, so you’ll have to make a generalized decision from them in some cases).

Okay thanks. Why such a big tank for such a little gecko. I also have a house gecko i got around a year ago i am trying to get rid of it because i dont really like it that much my question is can i house them together but this probabley be a no since the big size difference. Handling and stuff like that shouldn’t be a problem since all my animals are display pets except two.

Measure 12 inches in one 20 gallon tank. Tell me if that’s small compared to the tank size. These are active, stalky geckos (especially during the night, they may hide during the day). If they are cramped up in a tank that’s barely big enough to fit their full adult length on one side, how on earth would they be comfortable?

The golden gecko would no doubt attempt to eat the house gecko. If it happens, the goldie could choke on the house gecko or the bones would lodge in the stomach.

Question for you: if you got tired of a gecko that wont live far beyond six years (house gecko)after a single year, how long will you be interested in this golden gecko, which can live to be 15, before you decide it’s not fun anymore and follow the same thing?

Pardon, I meant to say 10 inches. They may hit about 7 to 8 inches after the first year, but casually grow larger the longer they’re alive, though at a much slower rate.
