Also, funny story...I was worried right after I got him because I never would see him shed. It was 4 months and I decided on a wednesday that I would him to the vet that upcoming Saturday. That Thursday one of my students was by the tank and he screamed "Ewww Miss Warner Miss Warner, Sunny is eating his skin!" I had no clue at the time that they ate their skin after shedding, and that concluded the mystery!! :) I can give a few pointers on owning a Golden: *Be sure he has a lot of spaces to hide. I have lots of silk plants and rocks to hide under. *Be sure he has stuff to climb on. I have a few pieces of driftwood that I boiled. He likes to hang out on them at night. *Be sure he is at least in a 20 gallon. I am currently seeking a new enclosure, because although the 20 suits him okay, I think he’ll be happier in something taller...so he can climb more. *DON’T put a lamp directly on top of the tank! This is dangerous because they climb and could get burned. *DON’T mix species...I have seen it before (never done it myself) and it only ends up in disaster. *Although a lot of people say they only drink from droplets....this is not true (in my case at least). I do mist the tank 3X a day, but my gecko prefers to drink directly from the bowl...so I need to change the water much more often. I have seen him on MANY occasions walk up to the dish and drink. It’s quite adorable. *Despite what some people say (especially on here) DON’T pick up your golden or handle it frequently. They are very skiddish animals, and they will get stressed out/bite if you pick them up. I DO however, occasionally "pet" my gecko. He seems to enjoy a rub on his head once in a while...it’s adorable. As for picking him up....I don’t even bother, because he’s happy now....why ruin it? *Some people say not to use a repti carpet for bedding, but I find this is the perfect substrate (as long as you can devote the time to misting the cage 2-3 times a day). The carpet seems great to me because it is extremely easy to clean and I feel it stays cleaner. My gecko is extremely healthy and I believe it is because of the clean condition the tank is in. The tank is very easy to clean with the carpets....therefore I have no problem cleaning it 2 times a week. All you have to do is take the carpet out soak it in hot water with the tiniest smigin of dish detergent (along with the rest of the items in the tank of course). Then I use a wet paper towel (warm water smigin of dish detergent) to get out any grossness that ended up underneath the carpet. I wipe the tank down, Rinse the carpets in cold water (I use the sprayer on my kitchen sink...rinses them really well) and ring them out. Then you can put them right back in wet. This whole process takes me 10 min. These carpets tend to retain the moisture well, and my Sunny hated substrate anyway...it was stressful for him to get a mouthful when eating dinner. I don’t even remove my gecko while cleaning because he is so used to it....he’ll just climb the glass and wait. *Moving them will make them pissed....mine wouldn’t eat for at least a week after I would move them to and from my classroom/home. This resulted in me keeping him in my home for good ;) . *I use a red heat lamp. This is awesome because I don’t have to worry about turning it on and off. It just stays on all day/night. A red heat lamp is good because it won’t interrupt their nocturnal behavior. I DO however, move the tank a little away from the lamp at night, so the temp goes down a bit. I guess I can’t think of anything else, but I just found this site, and I figured I would add some tips. |
