 Golden gecko substrate

Arboreal geckos have a much smaller chance of getting impacted from substrates than terrestrial ones. Golden geckos tend to hang out towards the top of the tank, so as long as you keep the food items in a dish or cup, then there’s no threat.

However sand has another threat. It’ll dehydrate the tank, which needs to be pretty high in humidity. If too much water is added to the sand, it becomes mud and molds considerably. Instead of this substrate, try using something like non-fertilized potting soil or a good olde fasioned bag of peat. Since both are relatively easy to afford, it’ll be less painful to change it out every three months to prevent stuff like that classic molding issue and gecko waste filth.

 Golden gecko substrate

Most golden geckos sold by breeders and at petstores are male. Females tend to be 4 to 8 times more expensive (I’m talking 40 to 80 dollars instead of a 10 dollar male), and males are in ready supply due to their solid golden/yellow coloration. If you look at the crotch of the gecko and see a v line between the legs or two small buldges at the base of the tail, it’s male. Males will also produce a pink buldge (hemipenis) when they piss - and especially so when they piss on you in defense.

I don’t know what you meant by ’waiting on another gecko to be ordered’, but don’t at all put it with the golden gecko you currently have. Both sexes can be extremely territorial. Even a male has sometimes been known to turn on a female and vice versa. That and the tank would have to be absolutely huge. (We’re talking 20 to 30 gallons per geckos here).

Anyway, to know conclusively the gender of your gecko, go take it to a herp vet in your area. Geckos should be given a checkup once a year anyway; not to mention that most golden geckos are wild caught or farm bred and, therefore, have a high possibility of parasites.
