Goldengeckos are reasonably hard to care for (and that’s in my opinion). They’re usually taken from the wild - specially where petstores are concerned - so when you get your gecko be sure to schedual a vet trip. This is cause all wildcaught geckos will have some form of parasite in them. If you can’t find a vet that does reptiles in your area, don’t get a reptile. They’re not a gecko that’s meant to be held much or at all. They have very delicate skin and stress very easily. It also smarts when they bite (and a golden Will bite if you handle it the wrong way or on a bad day... Or pick it up too fast... Some will bite for no reason. Either that or deficate on you to make a statement). As for the caging, humidity, temp requirements, you can find all this out by looking at the different caresheets out there (DD’s caresheet is my fav of the bunch on this website) Have the tank and everything set up (and a vet found) a week before making the purchase of the gecko. If you don’t have everything set up beforehand, it’ll stress the goldie out. The tank should be in a secluded area of the house, where people don’t walk by it constantly all day long. The golden gecko might not eat in the first week to two weeks after purchase. However after the 2 week part, take the gecko to the vet (again) and they’ll teach you how to syring feed - which is not something you can improvise or figure out on your own. You don’t want your future goldie starving to death (which I’ve seen numerious people let their lizards do on this forum. It angers me). What else. They’re nocturnal. They’ll probably hunt and eat things when you’re asleep. Most goldies I’ve known have been shy, but will be out and about in the later day if they’re happy/comfortible. They should be fed 3 times a week, 5 to 10 crickets or mealworms at a time (really all determines on how big the gecko is and how much it’ll eat in one sitting). Be sure to use cricketdust (or a calcium dust) on the insects before putting them in the tank. And if the geckos don’t show signs of eating any crickets in the first day, take the crickets out of the tank and try again in the night (this is cause crickets are infamous for chewing on lizards) That’s about it for now. |
