 Am i doing ok?

ok.. i got a golden (Cooper) a couple of weeks ago and have researched like crazy for info on proper care... i’ve got him in a 10gallon tank w/ a few pieces of wood, some vines, and a log to hide under. i usually put a moist paper towel under this. he eats 2-3 dusted and gutloaded crickets. i feel bad because i need to heat his cage more, but as soon as i get some cash im going to get him a nice flourecent lamp. i spray the cage frequently . he seems to lie under the log a lot, usually with his head poking out. he doesnt climb the wood or walls as much as people say they do. and i believe he’s shedding now.. and after this im going to put in a shallow water dish for him to bath in.. he’s usually a darker color (that means stressed? what can i do for that?). many times when i open his cage he’ll climb one wall and then jump to another and another and then onto me or the counter. Am i doing a good job with him? any suggestions? thanks for your help!!!

^^` not being mean or anything. But the next time you get a gecko, do the research before you get it. And have everything set up a week before hand. I also recommend you find a vet for your goldie so you can get dewormers for him incase he has some form of parasite hanging around in him.

Goldies need a 20 gallon tank. 10 is just a little too cramped. I say if you move him up to a 20 gallon he’ll probably be a bit more comfortible.

Papertowel is fine for a substrate. But a good way to keep the humidity up is to thurrowly spray the tank 2 times a day with a water bottle. This’ll also help with his shedding.

Sometimes goldies just need time to adjust. I’m sure if you keep working at it, enlarge his tank, and randomly move the tank furnature around weekly, he’ll come out. Mind you, I move the tank furnature around every week after I clean the tank (spraying windex on a papertowel and whipeing it down. Then repeating that with water. Followed by giving hte tank 10 minutes to air out before putting everything back in).

Heh, mine tries to plan escapes. He’ll run up my arm to get out. Just shows that they’re pretty smart thinking little critters. Mine also wouldn’t eat on his own for months (during hte time I got him dewormed), but now that he’s eating fine he’s more active and wild.

Yeah, the darker coloration usually means he’s pretty stressed. A good few ways to calm him down would be 1, putting hte tank in a secluded room that people don’t walk by daily (like a bedroom). 2, taping a cut up paper grocery bag over 3 sides of the tank (on the ouside). 3, don’t handle him or fool with his tank for more than 20 minutes a day unless you absolutely have to.

For lighting right now, you can get a desk lamp and shine it down on the tank (60 watt regular peoplebulb) from 12 noon to 7 or 8 pm daily. This’ll help put him on a day/night cycle.

Thanks! where can i find a vet for him? i had done research beforehand and most of the things i found said that a 10 gallon was all a single golden needed... but i’ll try to find him another one once i get some money. Have you ever had your gecko jump on your face? that was the first thing Cooper did.. i was cleaning his cage and he jumped on the wall directly in front of me.. stared at me for a few seconds and then leaped onto my face! thanks again for your help!

YES. I have had Sade leap on my face before. Also, once while syringfeeding him, he slipped through my fingers, went up my arm, got on my shoulder, hopped onto my head, then tried to take a leap for the window. Little bugger... He also use to throw food in my face that he didn’t want. Mainly mealworms.

A list of caresheets for Goldies on this site is easily reachable. You can find them here Link I recommend checking out sheets of DragonDorado, myself, and CroBiatach.

You can find a herp vet (or a vet that does herps) by looking in the Yellowpages under V for Vet and calling every individual numbering asking them if they do herps or not. Another way (if way 1 fails), is to find the number for the ASCPA or go to their website and ask them. They’ll tell you where one is.

I found my reptile vet through my regular vet, they recemended two different vets and the one I picked has worked out well.

Lol.. Yes, Goldies do have wonderful personalities! My one male, Shy-boy. He’s so very very shy and timid but at night when I try to go to bed.. All I hear his him running around like crazy up and down, all around his tank... The pitter patter of little sticky feet. lol.

Oh.. Kelli, have you tried feeding Sade any small sillkies?

Nono, I got sade to eat on his own now. He eats 4 some adult crix (before chirp age) at a time and hunts. But I have to leave the crix in the tank overnight for him to do it. He just doesn’t wanna eat them if I’m near the tank. But I’ve watched him... All stealthy and meloishly sneaking around. So there’s no need to go expensive and get silkies.

I think in a week or two I’m going to get some mealworms and see if I can get my lizards to eat those. And if Sade doesn’t want any, then I know Axe will eat them.
