 HELP PLEASE!!! PLEASE ASAP!!!!

i dont know what is wrong with my golden gecko...it has been this way for a couple of days now. its body is about 75% covered in black. the black parts are somewhat bumpy and it looks like you can see its ribs or soemthing. it is moving and acting somewhat normal but im not sure if it has eaten lately because there is another gecko in the cage with it. the other gecko in the cage also has back on it, but only a small spot. is it a disease or something? what should i do?? Help please!!

A picture would really help. When you say black, do you mean something along the lines of this colour?

You should seporate your gecko’s, especially if they are different species but aside from that could you tell us a bit about your set up?

i do not know what was wrong with him. i just got up and went to check on him and he is dead. and no, it wasnt that kind of black, it was pitch black like the actual color black. it looked like a disease or fungus or something. but i really want to prevent my other gecko in that cage from dying too. the one thats alive only has about a one inch spot on its back. my setup, it is a hexagonal shaped fish tank with a black lid and a long light bulb not a small fat one. it has two fake trees in it, a hollow wooden log that is real, and a heavy dish for water. and we just fed them yesterday so they were/are not starving. please help me save my other one before its too late! PLEASE!

Goldies will literally turn a solid black to dark grey color when they are stressed beyond all right. It’s not a fungus or desease. It’s their body expressing how they feel. They’ll also go a dark coloration when hiding (ie, trying to camoflague in), but I don’t think this was the case.

How Big via Gallons was your tank? If it was a 10 or less, this would explain why the two were stressed. Golden geckos need 20 gallons of tank room Each.

They were probably also both male. And males Will fight, sometimes to the death. If not fight behind your back, then stress themselves to death.

If they were both in a small tank and both male, it’s no wonder why one died.

My recommendation is for you to go out and buy a rectangular fish aquarium, 20 to 25 gallons large + lid. Make sure the new tank has a safe dirt substrate (bed a beast does wonders, digging dirt from your backyard is not good), a bought or sanatized branch in there for them to hide around/behind, a place for them to hide (like those little caves), sticks for them to climb on, and a water dish. For my waterdish I use a planters dish, which you can get for upwards of 35 cents, and fill it so it’s shallow... My goldie will dive into it and sit in it when he’s getting ready to shed.

Make sure the tank is not by a window, as the sunlight will heat the tank up like a car.

Make sure the tank is in a secluded room, as people going by the tank daily will stress the goldie out.

Also make sure the humidity in the tank is between 70 and 80%. You can find this out by buying a humidometer if you don’t have one. Thermometer temp should be 85 to 90 during the day, 80 to 85 during the night (drop 5 degrees for the cool side). The fish tank strip meters don’t do crap if you have one. They can be over 10 degrees off. So your best bet is a digital or dial meter.

Lastly, make sure your last remaining goldie sees a vet. Most goldies I’ve seen from petstores can and will have parasites.
