 Substrate for incubator

i started a couple years ago breeding a couple females to my male. that year i didn’t get any hatchlings cause i either had too much moisture or too little. i didn’t really know enough then. last year i got about 1/6 eggs to hatch, which is a start... but now i need to know which substrate you guys use. i had been using vermiculite the first year but decided to use perlite instead last year. so far this year the perlite doesn’t seem to hold the moisture and so i switched back to vermiculite. is that better? i did the whole put it in a paper towel, soak the towel and vermiculite, then squeeze method some guy told me at one of our local shows and it looks better than the perlite did. so what are u guys using?
also, when should i get the eggs out of the hide? i pulled four of them out and i think i pulled them out too early cause the four i pulled out while they were still a little soft have died and three out of four that i pulled out when they had had time to harden are still with me.

Well I am using vermiculite, but this is my firstyear breeding. I think that vermiculite is better (in my opinion) beacuse like you said It holds water better. Taake the eggs out as soon as you find them, just be gentle. Hope I helped.

Hi, I dont know what it is but i can give you another method. But this is using perlite. So you weigh a container then the caontainer with perlite filled 2/3 way. Subtract the container to get weight of perlite. Multiply that times that by 0.8 and that will give you how much water you need. Use a spray bottle and spray the perlite from top to bottom until it equals the weight of the perlite and the weight of the water you need. With that formula, you wont need to add anymore water into the container the whole incubation time. Just open the lid once a week to let air in. Goodluck

sorry i didn’t get back. i haven’t had much time to get on here lately.
the method some guy told me to do was to put some vermiculite into a paper towel and ball it up. then you get the paper towel wet (with the vermiculite in it) and squeeze it out until it doesn’t drip anymore. thats what the guy told me and i was wondering if anyone else used this method.
