 Breeders Please Respond!

Hello everyone I am Joe, I have owned many different reptiles in the last five years. mainly snakes and monitors but now i want to try something a little diffrent. I was thinking about breeding leos. How is it? Is it difficult? Are they a good lizard to start out breeding? how big of a tank would i need? how many females to 1 male? what would i need? And what do i need to do in order to get fertile eggs? I have been researching for quite some time now, I went out and got some books on leos but i would like to hear it from you guys that have bred leos. If you would answer me back I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks guys!
-Joe

Hey, I also own monitors and snakes and compared to leos....leos are much easier to keep. Feeding is simple, housing is pretty cheap and simple compared to monitors. You can keep them in large plastic containers or a rack system. Doesnt need to be any larger then 40 gallon. I use a newspaper as substrate so thats real easy to clean...Over all simple to breed. One male, and about 3 females and you ll be getting a good amount of eggs. Incubation temps are up to you if you want males or females. Fertile eggs? well i think the male leo takes care of that huh? hehe

They’ll tell you everything. I just started breeding so my advice won’t be as great.
So, you said you bred monitors? I love tegus. Do you keep tegus? They rock!

I prefer to keep my leos all separate. My males and females all go in different drawers in the rack then I do selective breeding and match my males with females to get desired results.

where on the tank should i put a UTH on the same side as the heat lamp or on the cool side?

Hi, what kind of leos are you looking for? Morph? Try kingsnake. Lots of good stuff on there.
Thats a good tank for breeding but I dont use heat lamps. I only have a UTH on on the warm side undet a hide. Umm about the keeping them together. Some breeders have different views on this. Keeping them together would lower the chances of them not fight everytime they are introduced. Some say the males can annoy the females but i dont think so. Over breeding maybe...i dont know.

you don’t use heat lights? what do you use to keep the tank hot on one side? just a UTH? will that work for breeding also?

Yeah it works. Ive been to a few big breeder’s places and seen their systems. I havent seen any use heating lights. Either use UTH or heat tape will do. They UTH should be enough to keep your warm side hot enough. Unless you live far north and it freezes over alot. If you keep the leos inside the house i think it should be ok with just a UTH.
