 Sick Pregnant Gecko...

I recently introduced a male Tremper Albino Leopard Gecko to my 2 females. He mated with both of them, but one of my females is not eating anymore and is dangerously skinny. She has bite marks, so I know the male was aggressive with her. I know she’s pregnant because I can see the eggs since she’s so skinny. Any solutions on how I can get her to eat again?

If your female was that skinny to begin with you should never have introduced her to a male, you should have waited until she was big enough-it can be dangerous for underweight geckos to bare eggs, they can become egg bound/have problems laying the eggs some can even die from being malnourished-the egg takes the geckos calcium etc to promote their own growth.

As others have said alot of females do stop eating close to laying their eggs some stop straight away it depends on the gecko their all different-our female eats right up to laying her eggs but she’s quite a chubby girl and loves her food.

I would suggest after your female lays her eggs-if she has no problems, make sure you supply plenty of crickets afterwards-she’ll be V.hungry then and ravenous! I know our female gets like that. Also make sure your crickets are dusted with calcium its very important.

After she’s laid her eggs you can try feeding her up then until she lays her next clutch of eggs-hopefully at least then she’ll be bigger for the next lot.

can you post a pic so we can see just how skinny she is also?

Best of Luck!

Sarah.

She was big enough to mate...I had her checked out beforehand. But, I am kind of new to this forum and I can’t figure out how to post a picture...how do I do that so you can get a good look at her? Thanks for all the help so far though!

It takes anywhere between 2-5weeks for a gecko to lay her eggs. Your gecko hasnt laid her eggs yet and you said she was recently introuduced to a male so if like you say she was big enough to mate theres no way she would have lost enough weight to become dangerously skinny! I dont know if its how you have worded it but its got me confused! Who checked her before-hand?

Leopard geckos are on of the more hardy of the species and are one of the easiest to keep. If a female gecko thats being bred is big enough she should have enough fat reserves to breed and lay eggs. They usually look quite skinny after laying eggs but they soon plumpen up when they start eaten again-which is soon after-if not straight away!

To upload pictures-first go to the members area (link at top of screen) then click on photo server. Then upload your pictures one by one to the site. Once you have done that when you reply to/post messages, click on get your photo list-this will come up in a smaller screen, then choose the pictures you want-click on the underneath it will then transfer the image to your post (it wont show up as a picture until you preview the post.) then once you preview it should show the picture and you can post it!

Sounds hard but once you know how it’ll be easy.

Sarah.
