Female gecko’s first lay, bad eggs?

My female bold stripe, bred with a SHTCTB, laid her first clutch today, but she laid only one egg, and it was floppy and thin. I calcium supplement, but I have heard first time females lay a bad first clutch. It cant be lack of calcium right? I dust my crickets all the time.

I also purchased a leo SHTCT female that I did not think was gravid, and she laid eggs, and i never found them til today, very hard and shriveled. That stinks

Here r the pics, the two together are from the shtct and the lone egg is from the bold stripe.

thanks

the two look gone, but the stripe looks fine from what i can see. get the viable one into some moist incubation substrate and into an incubator. i assume you know about the incubation temps and humidity. if the egg is looking a little deflated then moisture is a must. hopefully with a little misting it’ll plump up.

as for the comment on first time layers, i’ve seen it go both ways. but i’ve also seen perfectly healthy, non-firstimers lay bad. as long as your female is the right weight and has a pure calcium dish as well as the food dusting, i doubt its a problem with calcium.

keep an eye on her for a second egg though. sometimes they lay the second egg days after the first.

The lone egg was punctured, im assuming thats why it was floppy, so I guess I cant save it. Ill keep watching for her and the other girls clutches. Don’t leo’s stop laying around september though?

Thanks for your help

Actually, I thought as long as warm temperatures are provided year round with no winter drop. A first time female will lay all winter long until all clutches are laid.

Correct? or no?
Please correct me if im wrong.

Ill add my 2cents.
Those eggs look ok. The 2 you got are bad but thats due to you finding them late. Incubate what you can. Never know if an egg can make it or not til you try. Ive hatched some perfect babies from dented or small eggs.
As for seasonal laying. As long as you keep temps constant, leos will not be able to regulate and know when season is. They will ovulate whenever you decide to drop their temps to simulate winter. After temps drop and go up, they will develop eggs even if no males are present. They will keep laying in 3 week intervals until they are done. this could be 1 or 2 clutches or 20.
Naturally though they will generally stop around October and I dont like to keep them off the natural calender.

I suppose you could get a female to lay all year long, although in my experience that hasn’t happened. I had a couple females that stayed at constant temps year round, and they stopped laying all around the same time in Sept.

i think that leo’s bodies rely on other things to determine when to stop laying as well as temp. maybe if you set up a day/ night cycle plus kept the temps exactly the same, and put the female with a male more than just at the beginning of the season you might get such results. it would be an interesting experiment, but it would most likely negatively effect your geckos.

Ahh I see. For introduction breeding, you determine the breeding cycle and time they start to lay good eggs.
As for me, I keep them together all year in small groups so they must have good temperature regulation and cycles to ovulate properly. They are our pets, so their life is basically in our hands. Ofcourse methods will differ but try to pick what you feel is best and healthiest for your gecko.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. Your all very helpful.

I have about 12 girls I would like to breed, the problem is they all seemed to reach maturity now (during the end of the naturally occurring breeding season). I think ill just follow the cycle, plump them up during the winter good, and then breed again in the spring.

My SHTCT still has two eggs left in her, I see and feel them in her belly. So she should be laying any day, and maybe hopefully continue to lay for a little while.

Good idea. It’s nice to see people practicing responsible breeding. personally i think its a bad idea to breed geckos at the end of their breeding cycle, just because you’re hoping for a few eggs. better to wait a few more months and make sure you ladies are in the best condition, because the eggs they produce will be healthier.

If your trying to breed your geckos do you need the temp to stay the same 100% of the time or can you turn up the heat in the day and can reduce it at night time, and theirs also room temperature too to apply to this question.
