i had rasied discoids for about 2 yrs. they are faster at reproduction then dubias. it is a good idea to get at least three generations of roaches going and breeding before feeding out. this way you always have adults to keep the cycle going. you also have to remember to keep some babies after the third generation to replace those adults that have died off. if you dont you run into the fact of having to start your colonies all over agian. so after all of that you will not be able to feed your new hatchlings this time around and probably not next seasons either i would say you are looking at 2011 before you will be able to start feeding out. oh one other point dubias take longer to get to adult hood then other roaches but none are as bad as the rhino roach it takes them 5 yrs to get to maturity but they also live for 25 yrs. hope this helps you out. any more questions feel free to ask.

No, Each female will give you 20-30 babies every month. It then takes 4-6 mo for those babies to mature. You are either going to have to buy alot more than $50 worth or your going to have to wait for the colony to take off.

Thanks
Anthony

Just a suggestion here. Why not try mealworms? I feed all my leos mealworms and hatchlings tend to take them pretty well. Breeding might take about about 4-5 months before you can really feed any off.
If you buy in large mealworms not the x-large ones, they tend to be infertile due to the chemicals they use to make them grow that big or atleast I have never gotten them to breed. These will turn into beetles in about a month. These will breed and produce a very large amount of babies but these will take about 2-3 months to hatch and grow to medium size. You can harvest whenever you want but remember to keep a good bit of worms around to become beetles since the beetles have pretty short lifespan. Starting off with a colony of about 1000+ worms is good. I just use a large container type box to keep them in and they cant climb so thats a plus.
If you are interested in this, i can provide you with breeding tip. I havent to buy feeders for 2 years except the occasional crickets or waxworms as treats :)

I have a colony of dubias going currently. They are great feeders, and its nice that they give live birth. THey are not the fastest breeding sp. but they work well once you have a larger number of them. I would go ahead and buy the package your talking about, and maybe some nymphs. Set them aside, and keep them warm. How many animals are you going to be feeding out of this colony? For my needs, with over 25 geckos, I want to wait untill my colony has a few thousand roaches in it before I start feeding out of it heavily. I plan to feed my geckos B. Lateralis roaches while my dubias are regaining their numbers. Lateralis are less ecpensive, and I plan them to be a temporary thing. Maybe something to look into.
