 Questions on heat/humiditiy control

i’ve already told the forum about my leos poor health. i am still fighting for nibbs and have seen a small improvement in her behavior such as increased movement and less runny stool. its still soft w/ a bit of water but is way better than the just water i was getting. so on to the topic, i was wondering if i could get some help. u have all been very helpful and i truly thank u all. i want some more info on how to better control the heating and humidity n her tank. i am looking at rheostats and temp guns and wow they even have combo units w/ temp and humidity gauges available. i don’t completely understand how the rheostat controls both the uth and the lamp?! i would also love to get something more reliable to measure temp/humidity levels in the tank. i originally bought the leo kit from petsmart which had those little round gauges and i have come to believe they’r not accurate. i have complained that the temps keep changing daily depending on outside temps. i’m sure nibbs would be much happier if things were stable n her home. also how do u adjust the humidity in a glass tank? we r currently at 50% but if things go wacky i would love to know how best to handle it. nibbs is so precious and has truly become a loved member of my family. i don’t want to screw this up.

rheostats are great for controlling temps. I believe They work on lamps by working as a light dimmer (you can also use these on lights and uths, that’s what I use), controlling the electricity output to make it the right temp.

You are exactly right. They can be as much as 20 degrees off! Try getting an Acu-Rite digital thermometer/hygrometer at Lowe’s or Wal-mart. they are relatively cheap and are very cool! they are the only therms I use.

First I would get a reliable hygrometer in your tank so you can see whar the humidity really is from a more accurate source. But 50% is a bit high for the tank... I would try placing the water dish in the coolest place possible, and make sure it is small and shallow. Also make sure that the top isn’t covered ith anything but a screen lid.

hope I helped??!

i was looking at all those cool pics. i will get the rheostat asap! thank you for explaining so well i understand now how it works. and on the acurite i’ll hunt it down too. wow i didn’t know the acccuracy was so off! my moist hide is on the hot side, not the cold side right now. nibbs didn’t go n the moist hide when i had it on the cold side. so i can only guess that my humidity is way off to. but can’t wait to check w/ the REAL equipment. nibbs has a large shallow water dish on the cold side and a screen lid. thank you all so much gotta go shopping bye

The moist hide NEEDS to be on the warm side. With it on the cool it kinda defeats the purpose of having it (the molist hide).
