 Sick and dying leos..HELP

In the past week I lost two of my three Leopard geckos. The one I lost on Monday was gagging and acting funny. She was rescued along with one of my others and the only one left standing. "Crazy" had problems when she was rescued and at one time had worms (?)...like a cat may get I guess. In the matter of a couples days of her gagging, I came home from an appointment and she was dead. This morning I came home from work, and my newest patternless male gecko was dead. He was about 6 months old. I wanted to get them to a vet and take care of whatever is going wrong after I lost my first one. And, I guess it was too late. I have one left. All were/are like my children but the last one left is my favorite. I can’t lose her too....someone help...None of them have been eating right and I am starting supplemetns and hopefully it will help the last one, but what if it don’t....

Did you get the vet to check it’s stool?
I’d say go ahead and do that and if there is some
sickness I’d do doctor’s orders ofcourse I’m sure
other people have suggestions but I’m sorry
that is my only one
I know how you feel and trust me We’re all praying
for that little guy!

Hope I helped!
Brett

Well take her to the vet immediatly. It sounds like whatever one had they all had. Did you quarentine? Any new animals need to be quarentined from the others for at least a month until you are certain they are feeding right and everything. This sould have been done, never stick new animals in with your existing animals, its only a recipie for diaster. It sounds like a parasite, or some digestion issue.

there are tons of reasons that could be why you lost the ones you did....

what are/were their set ups like?? temps substrate humidity cage size and all that jazz

you said you are going to start supplements?? what do you mean by that? you havent been dusting crickets or anything since you got them or what?

biggest suggestion right off the bat is get the remaining one to a vet, get a fecal and possibly an acid fast stain to check for parasites and crypto. the beginning of the not eating right should have been your first clue to get a vet appointment asap. honestly with such little info you gave us theres no way we can try to help or anything besides telling you to take her to the vet asap.

sorry if i sound harsh or anything im not trying to.. i know how you feel trust me its not fun to loose animals no matter what kind they are.

My last one seems to be doing ok so far. I am giving her hydro drops, which she loves and some other medicines for worms and internal parasites, which she doesn’t care for!! But I think she is going to hang in. Once I know she is ok and go through a process of disifecting all of her environment, I am going to adopt or purchase another buddy for her. You can tell she is a bit stressed from losing her family though.

Im glad to hear she is doing better.

Quarentine you new leo for about a month, before you introduce them. Alot less stress

Oh and keep her as stress free as possible. Stress causes dieases.

Sorry for the misunderstanding...I do dust their food and also gut loaded their food. They haven’t been eating a whole lot though lately. For my last one left, I started using hydro drops now and calcium added right into her drinking water. Her set up is definitely not the problem. Everything I was doing was right. I had them in a 25 gallon tank with various hiding places, clean water supply always available, an area set up in the corner of the tank in a tupperware container with cocunut fiber substrate to aid with shedding, various food was offered (crickets, meal worms, waxworms (for snacks)), temps were always right on, not additional heating source was needed, misted tank twice a day, terrarium liner. I could not use anything but the liner because it is what the oldest two were raised on. Tried calci-sand once and let me tell you, they were two upset little lizards! When they cut back on their eating, I figured it was because we added the baby. I am going to make sure she is fine before I purchase another but she is now also stressed from losing her family. My two oldest were rescued together by my mom. They were being abused at a pet store. The one that died had worms at one time. Actually it was not even a year ago. My mom still had them at this time. She took them to the vet, administered the medicine and once that was done and all was fine, she asked me if I wanted them. I am thinking it is or was worms. Same sign as what she had last year but unlike what my mom saw, I didn’t see any worms in the stool.

I only quarantined for two weeks before I added the baby to the cage in December. I will make sure I do what you said when I get a new leo. Now that you mention it, I don’t think I ever really seen the newer one eat but here and there. He was growing longer and getting skinnier. I am going to petco in Reading next weekend, and I will take it from there. "Pretty" is hanging in and I think is going to make it. She is taking her medicine like the good lil leo that she is even though she is not fond of all of it. The others just got sick so fast, I didn’t know what to do. This is my first experience with Leo’s. I learn more everyday and how to care for them better and also how to help prevent things from happening to any other leo’s I have in the future.

So, what do I do about my lonely leo in the meantime? She actually loves to be handled, so I have been giving her a lot of extra affection because she is stressed from losing her lifetime companion. I would let her sleep with me if I knew she wouldn’t walk off. She loves to be outside, weather permitting. I always have given her more attention than the two that passed only because the other two were squirmy and did not care to be held and were likely to take off if you did. I don’t want to lose her because of stress.

I have good news...Pretty has passed what seems to be a closer to normal stool. It is regaining the hardness of it compared to the watery smushy stool...YAY

thats good.. honestly i reccomend that you dont get leos from petcos and get them online from reputable breeders... the beginning of last year there was a huge outbreak of crypto(not cureable and 99% fatal) in the big chain stores. though if you have to get one from a petco i suggest quarentine for at least 60-90 days(the longer the better) with at least a fecal brought to the vet for testing though a full check out by the vet would be better..

sorry but personally i hate big chain stores... ive had too many bad experiences and rescues taken in from them to like them...

I agree about the Petco and one other thing caught my eye - you mist the cage twice a day? And they were making gagging/coughing noises? Do you have a humidity gauge? They are desert animals - their cage should not be misted. It may have been a respiratory problem...

just a thought. Make sure the humidity is 20 - 50 % (some argue higher or lower by a 10% margin).

Good luck with the favy :)

1- Don’t get other geckos to live with it. Leopard geckos are solitary animals. Also, introducing new geckos can spread disease.
2- Don’t handle you’re gecko more than 20min a day. If it’s sick I don’t recommend daily handling due to stress being a catalyst for illness.
3- Keep the tank warm, and try to keep the environment as stress free as possible - limit the noise and movement.

I have actually been looking int6o purchasing for a breeder or adopting from a rescuer. If anyone knows any Leos up for adoption that have been rescued, let me know. I wish I would have know about that outbreak when I purchased the baby I did back in December.

I sprayed the glass because that is how the two older drink. The baby would use the water dish. It is not too humid. It was about four or five sprays around the glass and would evaporate quickly. The humidity would average about 30 if that.

I will do that. I have definitely been handling her too much I guess but she seems to be less stressed when she is out and about and able to roam around my arms, neck, shoulders and back! I have special hoodie sweatshirt she really likes. But I am going to move her into my bedroom where there is less activity. I will also handle her less. Her tank is kept warm also so I am okay with that.

It’s ok for the joking. I have a great sense of humor also, so I don’t mind. They were all living together and I did not remove the sick one. Bad mistakes on both. When I get another, it will not be from a big chain pet store and I will keep it on my other Gecko setup. Speaking of that...When I purchased the baby from Petco, I introduced them all to a new environment. Same setup the two oldest were used to living in but just a bigger tank. Is it possible that introduced something to my herd?!
