I’m new to leopards and want to know what u think of my setup

OK i have owned leopard geckos when i was a kid and want to make sure everything is good now i am wanting to get into breeding in the next couple of years but for now just want 5 or 6 as pets first no i have not bought the leopard geckos yet i am waiting til the reptile expo in July but i do have the cage already it is approximately 4 ft long by 18 inches deep by 18 inches long with 4 side vents 2 top vents and 2 areas with wire grills for the lights to sit one on each side that i am planning on using as there home. i also have a several smaller tanks including including 2 40 gallon breeders, a 55 gal, a 20 gal tall and around 15 10 gallon tanks yeah i know its alot but i couldn’t pass up the deal i paid a measly 200 for all of them from a guy who got out of breeding and needed to get rid of all of it quickly cause he was moving

what I’m wondering is which tank/tanks should i use first as I’ve heard if the babies are put in a large tank they can get stressed easily so should i start with the 10 gallon tanks and work my way up or would it be OK to put them in the big cage i am planning on having at least one hide for each plus the humidity box which will be big enough for all of them and was also thinking of putting in some fake plants for added coverage. and at least 2 small water dishes one on each end and a dish of calcium dust near the center of the tank

what would be the best substrate for them i had an adult female on very fine sand and she did fine never had any problems with her eating it but lots of posts say tile or paper towels i want something that is going to look good as well as be good for the babies to be on because the big cage is going to be in our living room

and what would be the best to feed them i know crickets and already have a supplier to deliver them as often as i need them but should i also feed meal worms

well thanks for any help you all can give me and if you know of anything else i should have or need that i didn’t cover please let me know i appreciate any help from you all and ill let you know when i get it all set up and post pics of the new babies when i get them as well as their enclosures

ok! Yay for cheap tanks!
- Babies can get stressed in a big tank, they can also get stressed from switching tanks. It was recommended to be to separate a 20 gal into two parts with a piece of cardboard and when it gets older just take the cardboard away and spread everything out. Of course that will stress them a little too (they are very habitual, if i put the water dish back in the wrong place after cleaning my gecko will pace around it in confusion lol ) but it might make it easier on them. Either way should be fine.
- You should have a hide on the hot side, a hide on the cool side, a moist hide on the warm side and an extra hide per extra gecko - at least - for adults. Babies tend to huddle together more and are less territorial, but I’ve heard of babies biting each other right out of th egg, so giving them their space is a good idea.
-Fake plants are fun - don’t cover your geckos too much or you’ll never see them ;)
- Substrate - yes, many adult geckos do fine on sand but there is always risk of impaction and babies should never be on sand (it even says so on the back of pet sand bags) - paper towels work great - reptile carpets of all sorts are available in cool colors, tile is good - anything that is not particles (sand, crushed walnut, etc.)
- Crickets are great - variety is best - you can feed mealworms, silkworms, roaches, and waxworms and phoenix worms for snacks.
http://www.mulberryfarms.com/ is a great place to get everything you could need.

Also, just read through this forum, and check out other forums (google search) and just read through posts that you are curious about. There’s endless info on leos out there for the takin!

Here are some cool examples of leo tanks for inspiration

And this is mine (with humid hide taken out) with green repti carpet so you can see how nice it looks instead of sand :)

Have fun!

ok thanks for the pics the cages look great i am thinking of going with large natural looking tile like slate for the substrate and we have decided what morphs to get we will have 2 female blazing blizzards and 1 male and 2 bold sriped females and 1 male the males will be in seperate ten gallon cages so we dont have any territorial disputes and also so they cant breed the females to early i may also end up getting a few normal females to put in our 40 gallon breeder tank for added genetic material later if we really get into breeding as a full time thing and not just a hobby.
ok here are a few breeding questions along with some stuff i have already read just to make sure all of it is correct
when we do decide to breed we are probably just going to breed 1 female to start then if all goes well the first year we will breed the others the second year. i have aready planned a fairly large rack system for the babies big enough to hold around 50 plastic sweater boxes i know we wont need near that many the first year but the second year we may need to build a second lol also how many eggs should i expect when they start breeding i have heard around 16 total but just want to make sure and i know they are laid in pairs but how far apart should i expect the pairs to be laid and can i put more than 1 pair in each incubator or should i have an incubateor for each as they are being laid at different times. and i have heard its fine to use chicken egg incubators is this true or should i get one specifically for reptile eggs and how would i keep good humidity in the chicken egg incubator could i place a container of water in there in addition to keeping the vermiculite or perilite moist. and which of the to substrates is best to keep the eggs in well if you can think of anything else i should know about the breeding side of things please let me know. thanks for your answers ahead of time

wow i was just checking out other posts and came across the walls that people on here have made i think i may do the same in my big cage they are fantastic and look wonderful here is the link in case anyone else wants to look at it

http://www.repticzone.com/forums/CagesandEnclosures/messages/1628276.html

those walls are amazing and to think its all foamboard covered with a little grout cant wait to get started on mine lol i am already planning several caves and a moist hide for the back and maybe a waterfall and stream and pond stretching across half the tank and on the other side a ruin or something i will also put the fake plants into the foam board to make it look like they are growing out of the rocks could i actually use this as substrate as well so i could put in hills and cliffs in the middle for them to climb just an idea i know it would make cleaning a little more difficult but it would look fantastic. let me know what you think

think it would be ok to put the four females together in the big cage if set up like whats on the pics i may just go with adult females so they will not get stressed in the big cage and get male babies let me know thanks
