 Why is my gecko digging?

what subrate do you use?

she should only be on solid subsrates

what size tank do you have?

what are the temps?

she may be digging b/c she feels cramped in her cage or b/c she may be laying eggs

i know some females lay eggs even if there are no males not sure how often leos do this but i know we had one at wrok that did this all the time

does she look like she is trying to go through the glass or is she kind of digging at the ground on the bottom?

Then why use it? That’s like saying "I know it is unhealthy for my child to eat mcdonalds 4 times a day, but I still buy it for him"

That’s bare minimum.. might wanna get something a little bigger and more mentally stimulating.

You can’t just say "here’s some warmth" and let it be! Proper temps are very important for every function of your leos body, like digestion, metabolic rate, etc. Your leo might very well be digging because her temps are way off. Get a digital thermometer w/probe. Thermometer for the cool side, probe for the warm. That way you can monitor temps and change them to a more comfortable leve if need bel.

How many hides are there in her cage?
Are you noticing this activity during day, night, or both?

 Why is my gecko digging?

It is probably very nervous from lack of space - the tank should be twice that size - plus in that small of a tank there is no room for enough hides plus places to climb and whatnot.
It also might be too hot or too cold - the temp is very important for proper digestion and to avoid dehydration and death. It needs to be 88-93 F on the hot side and ten degrees cooler on the cool side - also a problem with ten gallon tanks - it is hard to get a good gradient. If you go to Petco (not that I support them but they do have cheap tanks) you can get a 20 gallon for 25 bucks - and you can sell your ten gallon for ten bucks on craigslist :)
If you insist on using calci sand - please change your mind - but if you wont, please at least make sure that you have a dish of pure calcium in the cage for your gecko to lick, so they it doesn’t intentionally eat the sand.
Make sure you have a warm hide, a cool hide, and a moist hide, and a water dish big enough for them to rest their tummy in.
Good luck to you and your gecko :)

 Why is my gecko digging?

if you insist on using sand you could at least use a fine grade washed and sifted play sand over that calcium sand crap

you are being selfish by using that sand just like reflex said you know it is bad yet you still use it

probably b/c you think it looks good/better than a solid substrate like so many people i have spoken to use sand

if you want him to be healthy(which i am guessing you s b/c you came on here to ask a question) i would get a bigger tank and get him on a solid substrate

do you have any pics of the leo and its habitat so we can get an idea of what might need to be added

Guys lay off. Its the owner choice on what substrate s(he) uses. If they know the risk, they KNOW the risk. Just because you dont like it doesnt mean you should sit there and call them irresponsible, or tell them theyre wrong. At least they were responsible enough to ask a question when they had it rather than letting it go untouched. Everyone will raise their lizards differently, just because someone doesn’t do it the way you do doesnt make them a bad owner or like they dont care. Jeeze.

As for the probe you can search for them online. Snake owners tend to use them a lot. I have one in my 40 for my leos.

I get mine at a local fish store. It’s water proof too :) Some Petsmarts have them but they are more expensive there.

If their leo dies, thats their problem, not mine. Not yours. We cannot tell other leos what is wrong, merely suggest our opinions. I have mine on tile. Thats my choice. They use sand...thats their choice. And for your information I have 4 therms in my 40 thanks.

Look, I’m sorry. We all know the risk or should. But if someone screws up with their leo, and it dies because of it. Lesson learned. If they knew the risk and they did it and their leo dies. BIG lesson learned. They wont understand the risk until it happens to them. If they want to keep them on sand, let them feel the heart break of killing their pet. It’s not right I know. But they have to learn somehow. People learn from their mistakes. So let this be a lesson to them. Sorry.

well so far i haven’t had any problems with it and i have had my leo for about 8 months now so i don’t see that much reason to worry

8 months is nothing. It can take years for signs of impaction to start showing. And there are plenty of other things that can/will happen, too. I’ve got a rescue who was on sand. Not impacted but the poor guy can’t see because his corneas are scratched up so bad.
Anyway, sometimes reptiles will put their bellies on the glass if they are too hot.
I got my digital thermometer with probe for $7 at Petco. They work quite well. Very basic. Also get a cheap hydrometer just to keep tabs on the humidity of the tank.

no, you can’t keep it in a dark room - they need day/night cycles - even though they will mostly hide in the day, they do need at least some sort of light. Mine usually just has my bedroom window and a red light in the day (not directly in the window of course) but it lights up the room naturally.
