 Hides, hides and more hides...

Hey everyone, who’s annoyed with paying the outrages prices for leopard gecko hides, since we need what at least 3 per tank, per gecko. I don’t know about all of you, but I have now a surplus of leopard gecko’s because of my tinker (and me incubating her eggs, my fault I know). Anyways, I think we should all post pictures of our hides. To help give each other ideas on what we are using, for which hide (warm, cool, or moist) and possible even how we did it. I will post pictures of my hides by the end of the afternoon.

Whatever your geckos food came in - particularly giant meal work containers, upside down with a crescent shaped opening - works great and it’s recycling :) I’ll post pics later...

Right now I have a couple:

3:1 reptile rocks (found a great sale on the small and one medium one).
I’ve made several with plaster and plastic containers
Got Plant Saucers and cut holes in them
and have some mushroom (not a clue where it came from) that I’m also using

Mushrooms? What do you mean by that? Do you have mushroom growing in your plant saucer? i don’t think that’s a good idea lol.

No no not at all. It is this BIG mushroom with a green top that has a sign saying all Toads are welcomed! My mother brought two of them home years ago and I think it’s suppose to be a toad house in your back yard. It’s ceramic and roomy. I figured hey, it’s a fourth hide in Tinkers cage.

I’m also using just a regular plastic shoe box for her warm moist hide/egg laying box.

I’m working on doing the pics like I said, but I ended up at a craft fare with my sister. Here’s let me see what I can find real quickly!

The Plant Saucer Thing. I also use just one saucer for the hide. The double is to put the moss or whatever in it for the moist hide.

One of the hides i made with plaster and a plastic container (for moist hide). Used food dye for the coloration, but yeah plaster doesn’t like food dye and it leaks out over the next few weeks. Not good.

Another one I built

The plastic container I use. If done right (and not impatient like I get) you can pop the hardened plaster off the plastic container. I normally keep it in for moist hides but I do have a couple in a tank I’m designing right now that I warm and cool hides.

Also picked up 3 of these in the small size and one medium (since I found a petstore going out of business).

As soon as I get a chance, I will upload a picture of my "mushroom" so you can see what I’m talking
about.

I’ve also upturned a normal ceramic pot and cut a hole into it, not classy though don’t care for it. So come on people post pictures of your hides

When you get does with the plaster could you paint it and then let it dry really good?

I’m not exactly sure what your question is. But I have not painted the last as of yet. I’ve used different color grouts with the plaster to get different colors, almost like the brown/tan one I have posted on here (will do pics tomorrow).

As for painting the plaster and letting it dry really good. I guess, this isn’t much different then the rock walls. Lets do this, if you built a rock wall can you answer this question? Thanks

Can you paint plaster?

Absolutely! I would recommend using an acrylic paint, they come in a huge array of colors, you can also mix them to get whatever type of color you’re wanting to go for. Acrylic is safe for your reptiles, it is water based and it dries pretty fast. Once it dries it will turn into a plastic type material but it is great. I’ve used it on water dishes and on my rock wall that I made out of plaster.

Ps. Don’t use spray paint! Certain types of paints will begin to flake off and may be toxic for your animals. I really liked acrylic because it does not flake off.

Plaster is very easy to work with but it does dry extremely fast, the nice thing about it is that once it dries you can shape it with a knife or sculpting tool to have it have the shape/texture/pattern that you like.

Buena Suerte!

Here is what i did today.

How can i put a hole it the first one with out cracking it. I forgot to put one and that is what i am going to put the leo in. Its a big 107 quart bin. I cut the top off and put a screen you get from the pet store on there.

I am not sure if i understand where you want to put a hole but if you’re wanting to make a hole in your plastic container without braking it the best way would be to heat up a nail (use pliers to hold it) and sink it into the plastic container where you want the hole to go. This is efficient, wont look bad and will be quick.

Ps. if you’re too young to play with fire, please ask help from an adult because you will have to heat the tip of the nail either with a lighter under it or by placing the tip under the fire on your stove.

Good luck. BTW, I am not a leopard gecko expert by any means but that looks very small and unattractive, I do hope it is temporary. Great job on the hide, i think it looks great, you just need to shape it and paint it (with acrylic paint).

Awesome, to check out my Critter cages go here Link

I’ll photograph the mushroom that isn’t in use anymore in a little while, family just got back from being out of town all weekend (mom and dad) and it’s like they haven’t seen me in AGES! OMG I need my own place... LOL besides I’m sick of hearing about my gecko colony. LOL I’m keeping all the babies. I have 4 more (2 levels) 15 gallon tanks and a 40 breeder (which does have the UTH on it already) for more lizards.

Besides a 10 gallon too. The 40 Breeder is something that was taken down to redo. I want to do a ROCK WALL in it and some other things. So I figure set Tinker up in a new home so I can do that. I will practice the rock wall on the 10 gallon!

Yes... actually if you ask some you can have as small as a 10 gallon tank for one adult leo it’s whole life. If you want to do a small colony of females or breed, the rule of thumb is 10 gallons per gecko. I bought the caging set up I did, because it was 9 tanks, one 30 and eight 15 gallon tanks for $100. I figured that was something I could not pass up.

A 20 gallon (preferably long) would be a great set up for one gecko for it’s whole life. I think the two my mother has in a 20 is a little crowded, but that’s personal opinion and you’ll get a bunch of them on here!

That was a good deal. And I thought so. The rubbermaid bin I got is a little bigger than a 20 gallon and a lot cheaper. The falcon guy said it was too small and I didnt think so. Ill only have one in there also. Thanks for the help

no problem, glad to be of a help. It does look small in the picture, if you don’t deal with those totes on a daily basis.

Ed, I do believe Childress out-did your plaster-ness with the painting. ^.~

Er...didn’t somebody have a strawberry hide? =/

Also, I’m looking forward to this "mushroom" hide as well.
