? Help w/ possible leo purchase *pic*

We are in the market for a leo. I stopped by the pet store today and she has this one. She said he is a Hypo. I’m looking for more specific morph information. Do you think he is skinny? He has a little tail but I was thinking maybe it is because he is so young. Yes she thinks he is a male because he has 2 sacks. I asked if she saw the pores but she didn’t pay attention. He was a wild man so we didn’t get him out to take a second look. Do you think that females are calmer than males? Also he is priced at $59.99 - is that a standard price?

So my questions are -
what morph?
size ok?
would a female be calmer?
price ok?

He looks to be a temper albino.
He looks good for his age and size. But he could use a little fatting up.
No, a female would not be calmer.
The price is good for a pet store price.

I would say, buy him! He needs a new home taht will feed him lots and care for him!

It’s definately either a Tremper Albino or Bell Albino. Would have to wait and see it develop his colors and a good eye shot to truely tell. Price wise? Meh...so-so. I would definately you recommend checking out VMSHerp.com and look at their Tremper and Albino juveniles that are for sale. They range from $45-55.00. Depends on the Leopard Gecko, itself. Some females canbe calm, some aggresive, same rule applies for the males. Like Miss Froggie stated, he’s in fairly good shape, but it wouldn’t hurt for him to gain a few grams. It’s always a risky 50-50 chance that people take when buying from pet stores. Sometimes the extra $45.00 for shipping from an internet breeder would be cheaper than going to pay the vet to treat parasites, etc. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful gecko. If that’s the risk you want to take...If you do plan to purchase him....,

Examine the gecko carefully.
a) alertness
b) eyes are wide open and not cloudy
c) all digits (toes) are present
d) spine not visible, no bones sticking out, bulky

Also, before purchasing, ask the store ’reptile specialist’ to feed the Leopard Gecko, be sure to examine how much it is consuming, nothing to odd about its hunting, etc.

Good Luck.

My Leo looked like him, skinny with not much fat. Give him a week or two to get situated in his enclosure and feed him a few small crickets.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I should have elaborated on the whole pet store thing. It not Pet Smart or anything. Its a little hometown pet store owned by a family that is animals obsessed. It is very clean and well organized. I have been doing business with them for many years. She bought the Leo from a local breeder. Now of course I don’t know what the breeders living conditions were like. I wish I could find a local breeder but I have not had any luck. I was wanting to buy local so the Leo wouldn’t be stressed from being shipped. I called her back and told her to hold him until tomorrow. I want to take my son back to see him since it is for his birthday in a few weeks. I will take a better camera and get an eye shot and a bottom shot and hopefully you all can help me tell if it a male or female.

Honestly, I think s/he is on te skinny side. I dont think that s/he is worth the price... You thumb covered up the tail, but from what is visible it looks pretty skinny. Chances are that that getting that gecko as is will give you a more stressed out gecko than getting one from a breeder (even if it needed to be shipped). I have a few that hatched on 7/17/08 and are quite fat, I think that that one looks to be older and not as fat so that is were I get the underfed/underweight idea from. I see that the belly looks skinny as well.
On the other side, I purchased my two breeders from petshops (I was not as knowledgable as I am now, and accidentally got a supper dkinny female, and skinny male) HEre are the pics right when I got them (3 years ago)
female:

male;

another of my male (old photo, back in the loose subnstratedays... I’m still ashamed at myself...)
Here is a hatchling from 7/15/08

seee the difference?

Forgot to add that the male is now 80g and the father of the above hatchlings (up from about 30g) and the female is 65g (up from 20g) and also the mother of the hatchlings above.

Thanks for the pictures. That helps a lot. The owners daughter was holding him in the picture. I honestly was so worried about his/her major hyperactive behavior I totally forgot to check out things like it’s tail, eyes etc. I do want to make sure I buy a healthy one. I don’t want to start out with problems.

If anyone knows any local breeders in Horry county or the surrounding area in SC let me know. We will be travelling to Concord NC in a few weeks so that would be a possibility as well.

I just noticed, is the tail slightly kinked at the end? If so, I would strongly advise against getting one.

We went back today. We decided not to get this one. It definitely does have a problem with its tail and it is majorly hyperactive. Here are some pictures anyway. Does it’s tummy area look a little dark? Can you tell the sex? We are still interested in a local breeder if anyone can recommend one.

How cute!

the tail kinking can be genetical or due to a bad diet. Eitrer way, it is bad. I say male, I think you made a wise choice not to get this one, as the base of the tail is soskinny that the hempenal bulges are protruding out like crazy! Not a very healthy specimen.
