 Good questions to ask BEFORE you get your lizard

I’ve been skimming and decided this would be a good topic to start for some people who have been researching and think they are ready for their first leo. Here are some questions you should ask yourself first.

1) Do I have proper set up?
-Safe proper substrate?
-Safe heating equipment?
-Proper thermometer/hydrometer?
-Adequate amount of space?
-Proper number of hides?
-Is my set up ready before the gecko arrives? Temps correct ahead of time?
-Is my set up in a safe place?

2) Am I prepared to have nutritional food available at all times?
-Do I have the money and time to get food regularly?
-Do I know the nutritional value of the food items I have chosen?
-Do I have gut loaded feeders ready for my gecko?

3) Do I know I am getting my gecko from a reliable source?
-Am I choosing a healthy gecko?
-Am I choosing a properly aged gecko for my life style?
-Am I happy with the morph?
-Do I trust the breeder?

**MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION**
4) Am I prepared for a 20+ year commitment?
-Will I want this animal in 5-10 years?
-Am I competent enough to properly care for this gecko throughout it’s life?
-Will I love this animal for it’s entire life?
-Will I get bored with this animal in the near future?
-Am I prepared to supply veterinary care if/as needed for this animal?
-If for some reason I have to give up the animal, will I carefully chose who I give it to?

5) Have I really done the right amount of research?
-Have I read multiple care sheets?
-Have I asked actual people their opinions on certain topics concerning husbandry?
-Do I trust my sources?
-Am I willing to take constructive criticism?
-Will I ask more experienced owners if I need improvement before I bring an animal into my home?
-Am I going to ask for help when I need it?


Those are some very important questions to ask yourself before you bring a new leopard gecko into your home.
I thought this post was necessary by the number of questions and arguments I’ve noticed around the forum.

Thanks guys. I wish someone would have made one of these a long time ago...
Not to discourage people from asking questions, but this way I thought some people might be able to find out IF they need to ask questions.
