 Tail Dropping Being Studied

Hey guys,
I was reading in the Smithsonian Mag recently and thought that this was interesting. They’re doing a study on a leos tail to possibly help people with spinal cord injuries. My mom was actually the one that brought it to my attention at her house last weekend and she’s now become a woman that was repulsed by these guys to being interested. Anyways, I thought I’d share in case anyone else was interested.

This is everything that was in the magazine:

Quote:

Observed

Name: The leopard gecko, or Eublepharis macularius.

Tails They Lose: Like many other lizards, the leopard gecko can shed its tail to distract predators.

Rhythm They Lack: What’s unusual, researchers from Clemson and the University of Calgary have found, is that the detached tails move not just back and forth, as in other species, but also flip and flop.

Potential They Have: Studying leopard gecko tails could help scientists understand complex movements that aren’t guided by a central nervous system; they say the information might prove useful to people with spinal cord injuries.

Learn more about the leopard gecko at the Encyclopedia of Life.

Any thoughts on this?

It is a natural thing, but they’ve realized that their tails aren’t just flopping back and forth once removed. Leopard geckos tails have more complex movement so they’re not necessarily studying that a leo drops their tail, but the movements that follow. Their thoughts are that they once they get a better understanding of why the tail moves the way it does (instead of like other lizards that drop their tails) they can make advances toward helping people that have spinal cord injuries. People in accidents or people like my uncle whose body attacked his spinal cord and is paralyzed from the neck down.
I thought it was neat and a little exciting.

Pretty cool, isn’t it? Just think of the possibilities they could have with this.

Steven- I’m sure they’ll come around. They usually do. LOL
