This guy you have been talking to does not know a word of what he’s talking about. Leopard geckos are nocturnal meaning they do not use the UV benefits. Therefor, you do not need to worry about any type of UVB or any UV lighting. Stick to the baby supplement plan, Link. And make sure his tank in big enough for proper exercise. Then Metabolic Bone Disease won’t be an issue. Only reptiles that are awake in the day need UV lighting. They are the only ones that benefit from it, and/or need it.

MBD CAN occur , but with proper husbandry, supplementation, etc... It is very uncommon. If you flake off on proper supplementation, the chances of MBD gets much higher. MBD is very painful and an awful disease that will never go away. It can be treated and it can become less of a problem with calcium injections given by a vet. But it will never go away 100%.

Leopard geckos are nocturnal and do not use the sun for anything other than heat, therefore they do not need UVB, UVA or any other sun ray light type, just heat. That makes our job much easier keeping these geckos as pets. They do not need the sun to soak up the goods of calcium and vitamin D3, like reptiles awake in the day do.

I really don’t like making owning leos way too strict and complicated. The link Lani gave is pretty far out there, and not completely accurate or safe. Really needs to be checked over and corrected. Like, who gives their baby leo full grown locusts? They’re huge!

MBD, to put it roughly, is Metabolic Bone Disease. Can happen in anyone. It comes from not getting any calcium - which makes bones strong. The bones turn rubbery and deform, ’specially around the legs and mouth. First stage the limbs twitch when the gecko walks. Worst stage it effects the back and the leo can’t walk.

To avoid MBD, have a d3 calcium/vitamin supplement. You can get it in a powder bottle. I think I brought it up in that care-sheet I originally wrote out for you. Dust it lightly on the bugs once a week, twice a week for your new guy if you want. No more than that.

D3 is what you need. It acts the same way UVB does, but inside the gecko instead of above it. However the D3 in powders is potent. If you give D3 calcium every day or more than one to two days a week, you can OD on it and it’ll make the gecko sick.

And don’t feed your leo in a separate container when you just got him. He’s likely freaked out still from the moving experience and still needs time to settle in. Whipping him back and forth from tank to container will just stress him out more. It’s cool if he doesn’t eat every cricket you give him. And you said he may be shedding, so he’s probably just full or distracted today.

Btw, that last part of the post was in regards to the recent stuff in your other thread. I was just way too lazy to post in both.

Somewhere between 4 and 6 bucks.

I have this one, amongst others. Long as it says Calcium, Vitamin, and D3 on the cover you should be good.

Stuff I forgot to add:

Giving D3 calcium once to twice a week... It’s so easy. Crickets or mealies go in little plastic bag, you put in a small bit of calcium, you shake, and you drop the bugs in the tank.

A calcium dish is optional, and is a small soda cap with ’pure’ d3-less calcium for the leo to lick up on their own time. However it’s just extra cash you’ll be dolling out, and it leads to confusion. Don’t put d3 calcium in the tank at all times, as the leo can OD on it. Pure calcium is another separate bottle you have to buy and you Don’t have to.

Btw, the pet store guy you’ve been referring to? He’s hilariously bad.

Yeah, goldies are a pain sometimes but I still love Sade. He comes to the top of the lid when he sees I’m feeding my leos and wrestles with the glass impatiently. Expensive as all to get his tank and vet treatments done right.

All leos are basically the same concerning care. Some, like the albinos and those with solid red eyes, can’t have regular lighting... Which is kinda obvious when you think about it.

The cap/bowl of D3 IS a good idea though. Because leopard geckos cannot over dose on calcium and they are able to regulate their own calcium intake. It’s really is not that hard or expensive. Just a cap of calcium...

Lani they CAN overdose on D3 regular calcium no as it will just pass through their system but D3 can be toxic at high levels that’s why you only use it a couple times a week.

OK. So the calcium Without D3 go’s in the bowl, that go’s in the leopard geckos cage. The calcium with D3 you use to dust the insects that the leopard gecko eats. But you only use the calcium with D3 in it 2-3 times per week. OK?

The d3 stuff is the stuff you need.

Calcium keeps the bones strong.

D3 helps the leo use the calcium.

No d3 and the calcium goes straight through the gecko. Too much d3 is toxic. S’why it’s a once to twice a week thing and not an every day thing.

The ’pure calcium’ is the d3-less calcium I brought up before. It’s optional, and not needed. Don’t worry about it. You need the d3 one, got it, and are good.

And yeah, coat those crix. It’s okay if he doesn’t eat them today. Try again tomorrow when he might be more hungry. Long as he gets it once to twice a week you’re good.

There are is a lot of information out there, and people who would love to tell you what to buy. Use common sense, and look at several resources (and their credibility and bias) before you do anything radical.
